BETTY SCANES

BETTY SCANES 1783 -

Betty was the 6th child of John Scanes and Mary Leader, she was baptised at Ide 28th December 1783. Betty I believe became known as Elizabeth and married William Snell a Mariner, by Licence at Ide church on 8th December 1805. Elizabeth signed her name, but William made his mark. The witnesses were Henry Scanes and Joseph Hellyer.

I think they had 4 children, John Scanes was baptised 10th May 1809, but he sadly died the following year, buried 24th June 1810. Emma was baptised 11th June 1815,  Maria was baptised 22nd April 1821, but she sadly died aged 1 year 11months and was buried 27th February 1823. Emily was baptised 2nd October 1825, the register refers to her being the daughter of the late William & Elizabeth Snell.

Elizabeth died aged 42 and was buried 27th September 1826.

EMILY SNELL 1825 -

Emily was the 4th child of William Snell and Elizabeth Scanes, she was baptised at Ide on 2nd October 1825. Emily was only a year old when her mother died, her father had died before she was baptised. I found Emily aged 23 on the 1851 census working as a Servant to the Madge family in Exeter.
