CHAPPEL FAMILY TREE

Information taken from Stoke St Gregory Parish registers and compiled by Sue Froud

JAMES CHAPPEL

James married Isabella Chedzey at Stoke St Gregory on 2nd September 1800, witnessed by James Chedzey. They  had 2 children both baptised 20th July 1805, James was aged 4 and John was aged 1. Isabella died aged 55 and was buried 13th July 1817. James is a mystery, there is a burial for a James on 5th January 1817 aged 83, could he have been nearly 30 years older than his wife?

JOHN CHAPPEL 1804 - 1876

John was second child of James Chappel and Isabella Chedzey, he was baptised with his brother James on 20th July 1805. 12 years later in 1817 his mother died. There is a marriage of John Chappel sojourner to Elizabeth Hoil on 10th October 1826, this may or may not be our John, but I found no children listed in the baptisms for them, nor did I find a burial recorded for Elizabeth, so I am assuming that this marriage is not connected to this family tree. So taking all this into account I believe that John married for the first time to Sarah, surname unknown about 1833ish, but no marriage is recorded for them. However they did live in Stoke St Gregory and baptised 4 children: Tabitha on 19th January 1834 she married Henry Hector, William on 1st May 1836, John on 22nd March 1840, who sadly died aged 7, and was buried 13th August 1847 and Isabella baptised 6th November 1842.

Sarah died aged 39 and was buried 23rd July 1849.

One year later John married widow Leah Tucker who declared her father as John Tucker, on 25th November 1850. Leah had 2 children from her previous marriage: William and Susan as the 1851 census shows. They were living in the Woodhill area of Stoke St Gregory: John Chappel aged 48, Farmer of 4 acres born at Stoke St Gregory. Leah, aged 27, born at Langport. Tabitha aged 17, Glover, born at Stoke St Gregory. William Tucker, step son, aged 7, scholar, born at Long Load. Susan, step daughter, aged 5, born at Long Load.

John and Leah had 2 children: Sarah baptised 23rd July 1854, she died tragically aged 18 months, when she was run over  and "killed by Arking's cart passing over her body" , she was buried 2nd March 1856. At the end of the following year John was baptised on 25th December 1857.

John senior died aged about 74 and was buried 17th November 1876.

JOHN CHAPPEL 1857 -

John was the first child of John Chappel and Leah Tucker, he was baptised 25th December 1857. He  married Elizabeth Boobyer daughter of Emmanuel Boobyer on 16th February 1882. The couple stayed in Stoke St Gregory and raised their family. Their first child Ellen was baptised privately on 28th January 1883. William was baptised 24th February 1884. Sarah was baptised 27th June 1886. Elizabeth was baptised 25th March 1888.
