CHARLES CHEDZOY (3)

My thanks to Sophie who contacted me regarding her family, it's taken a while, but I finally managed to link us altogether. Also to Gary Chedgzoy and Colin Jose for their information.

CHARLES CHEDGZOY 1825 -

Charles was baptised at Stoke St Gregory on June 1825, the son of John & Ann Chedzoy, grandson to Issacher. It is this line of Chedzoy's that kept the (g) in the name. Charles married Fanny Sweeting from North Curry. I'm not sure how many children they had. Henry was born 27th April 1853, at Bristol Road, Bridgwater and Elizabeth was born c1865.

The 1871 census shows them living in a private house in Union Street, Bridgwater. Charles Chedzoy aged 46, Labourer, born at Stoke St Gregory. Fanny his wife aged 44, born at North Curry. son Henry aged 17,  working, born at Bridgwater and daughter Elizabeth, aged 6, scholar, born at Bridgwater.

The 1881 census shows that they still live at no. 2 Union Street, Bridgwater. Charles' occupation states "formerly Agricultural Labourer", so possibly out of work at the present, I shouldn't think he had retired at age 56. Wife Fanny aged 54, has no occupation, which looks as though 16 year old Elizabeth, the only child still at home, is keeping the family with her wage as a Char Woman.

HENRY CHEDGZOY 1853 -

Henry was as far as I can make out the only son of Charles Chedgzoy and Fanny Sweeting.  He was born 27th April 1853 at Bristol Road, Bridgwater. The son of a Labourer. He had a sister eleven years younger. Henry left home and became a Sailor, on the fishing boats. Aged 25 he married Frances Caroline White daughter of Samuel & Martha White, on Christmas Day 1878 at Helsby, Cheshire. Their first child Frances was born in 1879 at Helsby, followed by Martha in 1881.

I had trouble finding the family on the 1881 census, the spelling of Chedzoy was unique, clearly this name hadn't been heard of before in the Liverpool area. The census is as follows:- Samuel White, head, aged 51, Magazine Superintendent, born at Eastham, Cheshire. Martha White, wife, aged 61, born at Liverpool. Thomas White, nephew, aged 7, scholar, born at Eastham. Frances Chidzjoy, granddaughter, aged 1, born at Helsby. Henry Chidzjoy, visitor, aged 27, Fisherman, born at Bridgwater, Somerset. Frances Chidzjoy, visitor, aged 27, Fishermans wife, born at New Ferry, Cheshire. Martha Chidzjoy, visitor, aged 3w, born at Ellesmere Port.

Looking through the GRO index for Births, I found some more children. Henry born in 1883, Eliza born in 1886, and Samuel born 27th January 1889. By this time Henry was a Dock Labourer, at Ellesmere Port, Whitby. There may have been another 2 children Edith born about 1896 and Lily .

The 1891 census show the family living at Worcester Street, Whitby. Henry Chedgzoy, head, aged 39, Galvanized labourer, born in England, as were the rest of the family. Frances his wife, aged 38. Frances, daughter, aged 11, scholar. Martha, daughter, aged 9, scholar. Henry, son, aged 7, scholar. Eliza, daughter, aged 4, scholar. Samuel, son, aged 2. Elizabeth, daughter, aged 3 months. William Bell, boarder, single, aged 24, Galvanized labourer, born in England.

SAMUEL CHEDGZOY 1889 - 1967

Sam was born 27th January 1889 at Ellesmere Port, Whitby. The youngest son of Henry Chedgzoy and Frances Caroline White. Sam became a footballer "playing for a Club in the West Cheshire League. He was spotted by an Everton Official in 1910 who signed him up. It was predicted that he would play for England, this didn't happen until after the war, when he played against Wales in 1920. Since then he played in 8 International Matches." taken from Player's Cigarettes Card. Footballers, caricatures by "RIP"  Card no.8.

Sam had 3 children, Sidney born 17th February 1910, Charlie and Lily.

In 1926, Sam went to America, leaving his family in England. He became a player-coach for the New Bedford Whalers in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Then in 1930 he moved to Montreal, where he died in 1967. Information from Gary Chedgzoy. Picture from Chris Chedgzoy.

SIDNEY CHEDGZOY 1910 - 1982

Sidney was the eldest son of Samuel Chedgzoy, he was born 17th February 1910. Sidney married Sally Evans and they had one son Gary born 18th June 1932. Sidney also played football for Everton like his father.
