THE CHEDZOY PAGE

compiled by Sue Froud

The Ched(g)zoy's from Stoke St Gregory, Somerset, are a well researched family, and it seems that everyone I am in contact with about this name is related. This means that we can create the entire Chedzoy family tree one day. I started my research using my mothers knowledge of her family, and the family bible which is now in Watkins Glen, NY. USA. and a solicitors research used to find relatives of Oliver Chedzoy. Then using the Stoke Gregory Parish Registers that I photocopied on my visit there in 1996 (it would have been cheaper to have bought the microfiche) Since that time I have done a complete transcript of the Stoke St Gregory Parish Registers, that I have on loan at my Local LDS center. Other sources have been Census returns and the Internet through e-mails. Julie Chedgzoy had done a lot of research herself and acquired more information from John Lecky and others, Olaf Barrington Chedzoy has sent me information on his part of the family and some wonderful records of births, deaths and marriages hand written by Emmanuel Chedzoy of his family. My thanks to everyone who has helped with the information on these web pages. If you have any information you can add please contact me at sue@thefamilyhistorypages.co.uk

THE CHEDZOY NAME ORIGINS
Variants include:- CHEDZEY - CHIDZOY - CHIDZEY - CHEDSEY - CHEDGEY - CHIDGEY - CHEDGZOY.

Chedzoy - the man who held land, or once dwelt at CHEDZOY.
Chedzoy - from the Anglo Saxon Cedd - the island - of a man named Cedd

As you can see, there are a lot of variations in the spelling of the Chedzoy name. Many came about because not many people could write their names, and relied upon the Church Curates and Clerks to write it down. This is why names are spelt differently in different Parishes. The Chedzoy families of Stoke St Gregory, mainly kept to the one spelling, but even so it was occasionally written with the 'g', When John Chedzoy married his cousin Ann Chedgzoy in 1821, the 'g' got left in or added on their marriage certificate, so all their descendants now use the Chedgzoy spelling with the 'g'.

For more information about the origin of the Chedzoy & Chidgey names Nigel Chidgey has a "History of the Chidgey Name" by Brian Chidgey on his web site http://home.freeuk.net/chidgey/index.html  have a look it's very interesting.
