MY CHEDZOY FAMILY TREE
This is my direct line of Chedzoy's with links to other Chedzoy lines. My thanks to Julie Chedgzoy, John Lecky and many others who have contributed greatly to the research of this family.
ROBERT CHEDZOY ? - 1685
Records of Robert Chedzoy's birth and marriage are not listed in the Stoke St Gregory parish register. When Robert was born King Charles I would have been on the English throne, who was succeeded by Oliver Cromwell in 1649, when a lot of church records were destroyed. The records for Stoke St Gregory begin in 1561, copied from the original register that was stolen. By the time Robert married Elizabeth, King Charles II was ruling England, Robert and Elizabeth had five children between 1661? and 1668 and there may have been other earlier children. Walter born about 1661, no record of his baptism has been found, but at the time very few children were baptised, the curate of Stoke St Gregory made a comment to this in the register. Edward baptised 11th June 1663, at Gregory Stoke. Robert baptised 15th January 1666. Alexander baptised 15th March 1668. Judith baptised 13th June 1671.
Robert was a man of some substance, as he left a will which was proved in 1686, but unfortunately it was destroyed at Exeter in 1942. Robert died in late 1685 and was buried 30th December 1685, the same year as King Charles II, whose brother James II was then crowned, which led to the Battle of Sedgemoor in which two of his sons fought. Robert's wife Elizabeth I believe died in 1722 and was buried 4th November 1722 at Stoke St Gregory.
Edward and Robert fought in the Battle of Sedgemoor on the side of Monmouth, they were both captured.
WALTER CHEDZOY 1661 - 1710
Walter was the first born child of Robert and Elizabeth Chedzoy, he was born about 1661,during the reign of King Charles II, but as the records are missing his date of birth is uncertain, but appears to be earlier than his brother Edward who was baptised in 1663. Walter married Elizabeth Ivory on the 9th February 1691. They had 2 children. Joseph born 1693, Eleanor, I'm not sure when Eleanor was born, but Walter's wife Elizabeth died in January 1701 and was buried 28th January 1701.
Walter married Martha Musgrave on 30th November 1701 and the following year both his children were baptised together at Stoke St Gregory church on 25th October 1702, Joseph was 9 years old. Queen Ann was Crowned 1702. Eleanor died 3 years later and was buried 8th April 1705. Six months later Walter and Martha's first child Walter was baptised on 2nd November 1705, 4 years later Sarah was baptised 1st May 1709. Sadly the following spring Walter died aged about 50, he was buried 3rd April 1710, his baby daughter Sarah was buried 3 weeks later on 23rd April 1710. Martha was left to bring up the two boys Joseph & Walter by herself. Martha died in 1742 and was buried 24th October 1742.
I found a baptism in the Stoke St Gregory for Elizabeth Chedsey on 9th March 1718 aged 21 years, making her date of birth about 1697. I believe she could be a third child of Walter and Elizabeth.
WALTER CHEDZOY 1705 - 1784
Walter was the first born child from his father's 2nd marriage to Martha Musgrave, he was baptised 28th October 1705. Queen Ann was on the English throne. Walter's father Walter died when he was about 5 years old. When Walter was about 8 years old Queen Ann died in 1714 and King George I was crowned. Walter became a Mason which many of the later Chedzoy's also became. In 1727 King George I died and his son George II was crowned. Walter married Jane Goodridge on 2nd February 1729 and they had 8 children, but not all survived. The first was Walter followed by Isacher both baptised 26th September 1731, he was buried 16th December 1798. Then a daughter Achsah was baptised 25th December 1733 she married Robert Hoyl. Then followed a son Levi baptised 21st September 1735 and buried 6 weeks later on 9th November 1735. They had another son Levi baptised 7th January 1737 who survived (see below). Matthew baptised 22nd April 1739 who was buried 15th April 1741 aged 2, they baptised a daughter Martha on 20th February 1742 and then another son Matthew on 30th November 1746.
In 1755 the Parish book records "Walter Chedzoy pt of Rouffe casting ye Tower £2 5/". Halley's Comet appeared in the sky during 1758 (it was the first time it had been predicted). 2 years later King George II was crowned in 1760. Walter's fortunes changed the Parish Book records "1763. Ale and Cyder for Walter Chedzoy and his to sons for 2 year 2/9d". Walter lived to be 79 years old, but was buried 1st February 1784 a pauper. During his life time there had been 4 different Monarchs in England, and he no doubt saw Halley's comet.
LEVI CHEDZOY 1737 -1794
Levi Chedzoy was the 2nd child born to Walter and Jane with this name, his brother was born 2 years earlier and only survived 2 months. Levi was baptised 7th January 1737 at Stoke St Gregory. King George II was on the English throne. When Levi was 23 the King died and his son George III was crowned 1760. Levi was engaged to Susannah Combe, the banns were read during August 1761, but no wedding took place. 2 years later Levi married Ann Pearce at Stoke St Gregory church on 4th January 1763. They had 8 children. Mary baptised 15th April 1764 who lived to be 79 she was buried 2nd Jul 1843. Levi baptised 29th December 1765, he married Mary Champion (see details below). Issacher baptised 24th March 1771, he married Charlotte Baynham 11th May 1796 and was buried 2nd August 1839. John baptised 22nd September 1776, he married Ann Gait. William was privately baptised 13th August 1779 he did not survive, they named their next child William as well, he was born 1781, baptised 15th January 1783 aged 2 years, Joan also baptised 15th January 1783, she married Thomas Hooper 21st October 1806. In October 1783 an act of Parliament required the payment of 3d for every person baptised or buried. Thomas was baptised 25th November 1787, which his parents paid the 3d required. Levi died aged 57 and was buried 5th September 1794, his wife Ann lived for another 18 years and was buried 26th January 1812.
LEVI CHEDZOY 1765? - 1814
Levi Chedzoy was the 3rd child or Levi and Ann Chedzoy, he was baptised 28th September 1765. Like his grandfather Walter he also became a Mason and did repair work to the church. The parish book for 1786 show an entry for "26th April 1786. A vestry meeting for ceiling and whitening the Church. Mr. Edward Barrington consents to pay £5 5/ besides his usual rate. Contract entered into with Abraham Champion and Levi Chidgey to do the work for 15 Guineas". I'm not quite sure which Abraham Champion worked with Levi as father and son had the same name, however Levi married either Abraham's sister or daughter Mary Champion at Stoke St Gregory on 15th September 1789. Both signed their names.
They had 7 children. James born 4th January 1796 and was baptised age 3 yrs 1 month on 11th February1799, with his sister Hannah aged 7 months born August 1798, Ann was born September 1799 and was baptised aged 4 yrs 9 months with her brother Charles. Ann married her cousin John Chedzoy son of Issacher Chedzoy, see the John and Ann page. Ann died age 86 and was buried 26th August 1886. An infant was buried 6th February 1803 no name or baptism is recorded. Charles was born November 1803 and was baptised when he was 7 months old with his sister Ann on 4th June 1804. Rachel was born February 1807 and was baptised aged 3yrs 4 months with her brother George on 24th June 1810. George was born March 1810.
Levi did more work on the church as this entry in the Parish Book shows "1806. The whole amount of Levi Chedzoy's bill for repair of Tower and Ch Yard Walls, £47 9/2d". Levi was only 49 when he died, he was buried 3rd August 1814. King George III was on the throne throughout Levi's life.
JAMES CHEDZOY 1795 - 1862

James followed in the family tradition and became a Mason, he was also closely associated with Stoke St Gregory church, as the Parish Book records " 11th October 1815 A vestry meeting for "choseing a Saxon" James Chidzoy chosen." When James was 23 he married Sarah Wilmont the daughter of Henry Wilmont and Elizabeth House. Their wedding took place at Stoke St Gregory church on 18th July 1818, James' sister Hannah was a witness, James signed his own name. Tragedy struck the family in 1844, when Charlotte and Rachel died of Scarlet fever, Rachel died age 3 years on 26th January and Charlotte died 3 days later age 11 years on 29th January, they were buried on the same day 4th February 1844. James' wife Sarah died 22nd February 1850 aged 55.

Emmanuel became a Mason like his father, when he was 25 he married Elizabeth Miller daughter of Charles Miller at Stoke St Gregory on 4th March 1852. James and Dinah were witnesses with Hannah Miller, all signed their names except Elizabeth. Ernest Eli Chedzoy was the 6th child of Emmanuel Chedzoy and Sarah Way, he was born 23rd December 1868 and baptised 31st January 1869 at Stoke St Gregory. Ernest did not follow the family tradition of Stone Mason, he was a Labourer and left Somerset to go to Wales. At the time of his marriage Ernest was living at Llancarfan, he married Elizabeth Ann Ellis daughter of Charles Ellis from Rhoose. on Wednesday 23rd October 1898 at Porthkerry, near Barry, he was 29 years old and she was 26 years old.
They went to live at West Aberthaw, and their first two children were born here. Alice was born Tuesday at 8.50 am on the18th July 1899 and Jeanetta Sarah was born Monday at 2.40 am on the 27th October 1902. Edgar's brother Ernest Charles was born at Dany graig "the house under hill" which had given him grazing rights, Ernest left for America when he was 14, so Edgar took on the grazing rights himself.
Edgar
and Lilian on their wedding day
Edgar and Lilian lived in the center cottage of a row of three next to the church named the Picton, where their 3 children were born. Brenda Lilian was born Tuesday 24th February 1934 at 10.30 pm. Joan was born Monday 18th July 1936 at 3.30 am but sadly died that same day. My mother Shirley Lorraine was born Sunday 5th April 1937 at 11.55 pm.
Lilian died 5 years later, she had to have a hysterectomy which was successful, Edgar was with her when she was told she could come home, he said goodnight to return in the morning with her clothes, but that evening she slipped on the floor and haemorrhaged, she died and the Police had to go round to the house during the night to inform Edgar of the Tragedy it was the 29th March 1942. Edgar was left with 2 young daughters, later after the death of his father, he rented out the Picton and moved back to Homestead to look after his mother who had had a stoke, he met Lavina a widow with a daughter Sylvia. He married Lavina and his mother moved to St Athan where she died. Edgar wanted to buy Homestead, but his sister Sarah Jeanetta decided that they would make more money at auction, Edgar still bought it but paid a lot less than he had originally offered in the first place, it caused a big family argument. Edgar sold the Picton and bought the land next to Homestead where he built a bungalow in 1962, he named it Pleasant View, the road which ran by the side was Broadway, which is only one car width wide. Edgar died 28th September 1971 age 63, he is buried at Llamblethian.
