DAWLISH SPLATT'S

My thanks to Jill Chape, who started my investigation into the Dawlish Splatt's trying to connect them to other Splatt families from Kenton, Whitestone or Tedburn St Mary.

The information I have so far, has been compiled from the IGI, and Census returns for Dawlish. I have sorted them into family groups, some may prove to be connected after further research.

ELIZABETH SPLATT

Not much information on Elizabeth at present, she baptised a daughter Elizabeth on 6th November 1758. Then just over a year later married Robert Leaman at Dawlish on 15th April 1760.

This branch of Splatt's seem to have been Blacksmiths.

JOHN SPLATT

John Splatt married Elizabeth Adams at Dawlish church on 27th April 1782. As far as I can tell, the couple had 8 children: Mary, baptised 15th June 1783. Elizabeth, baptised 2nd January 1785, (she married William Martin on 30th November 1808). Jane, baptised 10th December 1786. William baptised 21st June 1789. Susanna, baptised 18th March 1792, (she married William Payne on 11th October 1813). John, was baptised 8th June 1794. Henry, baptised 30th October 1796. Samuel, baptised 22nd February 1801, (he married Susanna Parker 27th August 1824).

WILLIAM SPLATT 1789 -

William was the fourth child of John Splatt and Elizabeth Adams. He was baptised 21st June 1789 at Dawlish church. William married Charlotte Reed 10th December 1811. I have found nine children, baptised by them. Henry Reed Splatt baptised 26th May 1812. William, baptised 14th November 1813. Charlotte, baptised 18th January 1815. Mary, baptised 15th January 1817. Henry baptised 1st March 1821. John, baptised 8th January 1823. Elizabeth Reed Splatt, baptised 9th October 1824. Fanny Splatt, baptised 14th March 1827. Helen, baptised 17th April 1829.

The 1841 census shows the family living in Park Street, Dawlish. William Splatt aged 50, Blacksmith. Charlotte aged 45. Mary aged 20. John aged 15, Blacks Ap. Ellen aged 12. Marten Prynes ages 16, Ap.

The 1851 census, shows the family still living in Park Street, Dawlish. William has since died. Charlotte Splatt, head, widow aged 62. Son, William, married aged 32, Smith. Daughter-in-law, Elizabeth, married aged 34. Son, John, unmarried aged 27, Smith. Grandson, William B, aged 7, scholar. Granddaughter, Ellen, aged 6, scholar. Grandson, John B. aged 4, scholar. Grandson, Arthur B. aged 2. Servant, Anna Holder, aged 14, house servant, born in London, Mdx. Servant, John Margery, unmarried aged 19, Journeyman Smith, born in Shaldon, Devon.     

WILLIAM SPLATT 1813 -

William was the second child of William Splatt and Charolotte Reed. He was baptised at Dawlish church on 14th November 1813. William married a local girl, Elizabeth. (no date or Surname available at the moment). According to the 1851 census, the couple had 4 children. William B., born about 1844. Ellen, born about  1845. John B., born about 1847. Arthur B., born about 1849.

The 1841 census shows William Splatt aged 20, Blacksmith & Elizabeth, aged 20 living in Park Street, Dawlish.

By 1851, William's father had died an the family went to live with William's mother. William and his brother John continued with the family Blacksmith business, employing at least one man, John Margery.

WILLIAM SPLATT

William married Amey Lowe at Dawlish church 23rd November 1789. They had 7 children: Sally Low was baptised 5th September 1790, (she married Charles Bragg 13th December 1811). Mary was baptised 15th September 1793. Thomas Lowe was baptised 7th October 1798. Henry was baptised 9th May 1803. Sophia was baptised 1st January 1806. John Penneoille was baptised 23rd September 1808 and Eliza was baptised 3rd March 1811.

WILLIAM SPLATT

William married Mary Tuckett at Dawlish parish church on 22nd February 1821. So far I have found 4 children baptised at Dawlish. Martha Tuckett baptised 1st March 1822. Maria Tuckett baptised 12th February 1823. Jane Ann baptised 10th September 1833. Eliza Tuckett baptised 29th December 1825.

HENRY SPLATT 1796 or 1803

Henry has two possible sets of parents: John & Elizabeth Splatt or William & Amy Splatt.  Henry married Jane Dodge 5th March 1827 at Dawlish parish church. So far I have found 4 children: Jane baptised 10th June 1827. Sophia baptised 4th March 1829. Eliza baptised 10th September 1833 and Mary Keighway baptised 2nd September 1835

JOHN SPLATT

John has two possible sets of parents: John & Elizabeth Splatt or William & Amy Splatt.  John married Susanna Reed at Dawlish parish church on 11th October 1828. I have found three children: Frederick baptised 28th December 1830. Fanny baptised 5th April 1833 and John baptised 8th March 1835.
