DEY FAMILY TREE
This is not a direct line for me, but it is for Malcolm Scanes and Belinda Dey who has given me the inspiration to follow it and has given me lots of information on her line.
WILLIAM DEY - 1784
Not much is known at present about William, but he married Mary Hooper at Kenn on 21st April 1772. We are not sure how many children they had, but 2 were baptised at Ide. William on 16th February 1777, Mary baptised 27th February 1780 at Alphington. Ann baptised on 18th May 1783, she married John Rugg in 1805 he was from Mamhead. William was buried at Ide on 9th July 1784, his wife Mary was buried 17th December 1815 aged 66.
WILLIAM DEY 1777 - 1836
William was a son of William Dey and Mary, he was baptised at Ide on 16th February 1777. William married Ann Brice who was baptised at Mamhead 25th December 1778. They had 6 children. William baptised 10th August 1806. John baptised 14th September 1809. Mary Ann baptised 2nd February 1812. Eliza baptised 6th March 1814. Henry baptised 9th March 1817 and Thomas baptised 23rd May 1824.
William died aged 59 and was buried at Ide 3rd April 1836. The 1841 census shows Ann Dey aged 60 of independent means, Henry aged 23, a Joiner, Thomas aged 15, a Plumber's Apprentice, and Maria Hart aged 70, of Independent means. Ann died aged 65 and was buried at Ide on 31st March 1844.
HENRY DEY 1817 - 1894
Henry was the 5th child of William Dey and Ann Brice, he was baptised at Ide 9th March 1817. Henry trained as a Joiner and aged 23 just after the census in 1841 decided to go to London to be with his elder brother John who had settled in Islington and married. Henry married Harriet Harvey who came from Chigwell, Essex. They had 6 children: Henrietta born 19th March 1842, Charles Harvey born about 1845, he married Sophia Naomi Robins and had 6 children. Ann born 12th August 1847, John born 4th September 1849, George born 20th September 1851, Jane Louisa born 28th June 1854 and Thomas Brice born in the first quarter of 1857, sadly he died before the end of the year 1858. All the children were born at Islington and baptised at Old Church, St Pancras, London.
Belinda has sent me the details of 1871 census: 7 Tonbridge Street, Henry Dey, aged 54, Carpenter. wife Harriet Dey, aged 54, born Chigwell, Essex. John Dey, aged 21, Carpenter. George Dey, aged 19, Piano tuner. Jane L Dey, aged 10 which should be aged 17.
The 1881 census for St Pancras, London, shows that Henry is still living at 7 Tonbridge Street, aged 64 and a widower, retired Carpenter. George Herbert Coxall, boarder, aged 15, Bag Frame Maker, born at Tottenham. I wonder if this was in fact a grandson.
Henry died aged 77 and was buried at Islington in 1894.
THOMAS DEY 1824 -
Thomas was the youngest child of William Dey and Ann Brice, he was baptised at Ide on 23rd May 1824. Thomas became a Master Plumber, and by 1851 he was employing 3 men, they were living at 3 Guinea Street Exeter. Thomas married Ann who came from Witheridge. They lived in Exeter and had 2 children. Lavenia Anne was born in the December quarter of 1846, she died in 1897 aged 49. Jessie Elizabeth was born in the December quarter of 1848, they also had a house servant Elizabeth Beer aged 13.
Two more children were born Adela or Adelaide Lucy was born in the March quarter of 1853, she also died in the March quarter of 1897. Hermon Thomas Brice was born in the June quarter of 1854. Jessie Elizabeth sadly died aged 5 and was buried at Ide on 20th August 1854.
The 1871 census shows that the family were doing well, living at 31 Magdalen Street, Exeter. Thomas employed 4 men and 3 boys. Thomas Dey, head, aged 46, Plumber born at Ide, Ann his wife aged 51, born at Witheridge. Lavenia their daughter aged 25, Haberdasher, born at Exeter. Adela their daughter aged 19, born at Exeter. Hermon T.B. their son aged 17, Plumbers apprentice, born at Exeter.
Ann died aged 56 during the September quarter of 1873 and Thomas died aged 52 at Exeter, late 1876 or Early 1877.
HERMON THOMAS BRICE DEY 1854 -
Hermon was the youngest child of Thomas Dey and Ann. He was born during the June quarter of 1854 at Exeter. He married Mary Ann Wilkinson during the September quarter of 1875. Belinda has found 6 children. William Thomas R. was born in 1876 at Exeter, he married in 1901 and died aged 38 in 1914. Lilian born in 1878 at Exeter. Florence Annie Sophia was born in 1879 at St Pancras, she married Henry Owen Abbs in 1910. Alice L was born about 1884 at Kings Cross. Hermon B, was born about 1886. Kate Adela, was born in Islington in 1889 she married in 1907. Maysie was born in 1892.
The 1881 census shows Hermon T Dey, head, aged 27, Plumber born at Exeter. Mary A his wife, aged 24, born at City Road, Middlesex. William T their son, aged 4, born at Exeter. Lilian their daughter, aged 3, born at Exeter. Florence their daughter, aged 1, born at St Pancras, Middlesex.
