STEPHEN DIGGINS (notes, to be connected to Diggins Family Tree if and when possible)

Stephen Diggins of Doddiscombsleigh married Sarah Vooght daughter of Thomas and Mary Vooght at Dunchideock parish church 27th February 1775, witnessed by W Thomas Vooght and Gilbert Parker.

WILLIAM DIGGINS 1794 - 

William was born about 1794 at Doddiscombesleigh, he married Elizabeth Archer. They had at least 4 children. Thomas born about 1819, Stephen was born about 1820, Elizabeth was born about 1828, Sarah born about 1832.

The 1841 census shows William and his family living at Poppil? House, Doddiscombesleigh, William Diggines age 45, carpenter. his wife Elizabeth age 45, son Thomas age 20,  son Stephen age 20, daughter Elizabeth age 10, daughter Sarah age 5 and Apprentice Ann Gibson.

The 1851 census shows the family living at the New Inn, Doddiscombesleigh. William Diggins, head, age 57, Carpenter & Farming 25 Acres, born at Doddiscombesleigh, Elizabeth Diggins, wife, age 58, born at Christow, Elizabeth Diggins, daughter, age 23, unmarried, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Sarah Diggins, daughter, age 19, born at Doddiscombesleigh, Sarah Archer, Mother in Law, widow, age 79, Retired Farmers wife, born at Doddiscombesleigh, Francis Archer, Servant, age 19, Agricultural Labourer, born at St Thomas.

THOMAS DIGGINS 1819 -

Thomas Diggins married Mary Ann Jervis about 1846. They Settled in Doddiscombesleigh and raised their family. Their children were William Jervis born about 1847, Stephen born about 1848, Mary born about 1849, Thomas born about 1850, Edward George born about 1854, Sarah born about 1856.

The 1851 census shows them living at Newborne Cottage, Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas Diggins, head, aged 32, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Mary Ann, wife, aged 37, born at Tedburn St Mary. Thomas, son, aged 10, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Stephen, son, age 3, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Mary, daughter, age 2, born at Doddiscombesleigh.  (Their son William Jervis was staying with his grandparents at Pilt Farm).

The 1861 census shows the family living at New House, Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas Diggins, head, age 42, Master Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh, Mary Ann, wife, age 47, born at Tedburn St Mary, William Jervis Diggins, son, age 14, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Mary, daughter, age 12, Scholar, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas, son, age 10, Scholar, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Edward George, son, age 7, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Sarah, daughter, age 5, Scholar, born at Doddiscombesleigh. William Archer, apprentice, unmarried, age 21, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. (Stephen was staying with his grandparents at Ponsford Farm).

The 1871 census shows the family living at Megley Pool Cottage, Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas, head, age 52, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Mary Ann, wife, age 58, born at Tedburn St Mary. William, son, aged 24, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas, son , age 20, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. George, son, age 17, Carpenter, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Sarah, daughter, age 15, born at Doddiscombesleigh. William Jervis, (Father in law) Lodger, widow, age 85, retired Farmer, born at Dunsford. 

The 1881 census shows that the family had moved and Thomas was now a Publican, the census does not tell us where, except the dwelling was a Public House. I am wondering if this could have been the New Inn at Doddiscombesleigh, where his father William lived. The entry reads: Thomas Diggines, head, age 61, Publican, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Mary Ann, wife, age 67, born at Dunsford. Mary, daughter, age, 32, unmarried, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Thomas, son, age 30, unmarried, Wheelwright, born at Doddiscombesleigh. Edward G, son, age 27, unmarried, Wheelwright, born at Doddiscombesleigh.
