ELENA MAUD BAKER 1906 -

Elena Maud was the eighth child of Charles Baker and Margaret Ann Jones she was born 6th December 1906 at Senghenydd. Elena was known as Nellie. She was only 6 when her father and elder brother Charles were both killed in the Senghenydd Colliery explosion. Elena was working in Newport when she married Frederick Charles Henry Buckland who was in the Army, he came from Croydon, Surrey. They married on 24th December 1926 at Newport which was then in Monmouthshire. Work was scarce in the area in 1927 and he suggested to her brother Tom that there was work in Croydon where his parents lived, so the pair of them walked to Croydon as they had no money. It seems that Henry was dismissed from the Army. Tom found work, and Henry came back to Newport. 

Elena remarried in 1958 to George Benjamin Barrett at Emmanual Church, South Croydon on 27th September 1958.
