FROUD FAMILY TREE
My thanks to Tom Froud who put the pieces together for me.
WILLIAM FROUD 1774 -1851
William married Lucy Bennett on 25th June 1815 at Hartley Wespall. We have found 2 children on the IGI, Jane baptised 19th May 1816 and James baptised 10th July 1820. The family then moved to Heckfield where there are 5 children baptised in the registers for Heckfield & Mattingly. William was a Tailor according to the parish registers. Elizabeth was baptised 12th February 1823, Sarah baptised 28th August 1825, she died aged 11 and was buried 17th February 1837. John baptised 21st September 1828. Henry baptised 29th July 1832, he sadly died aged 4 and was buried 22nd November 1836. Thomas was baptised 1st March 1835.
The index for the 1851 census for Heckfield lists William Froud aged 74 born at Beech Hill, Berks. Lucy Froud aged 61, born at Stratfield Saye. Thomas Froud aged 16, born at Hazeley.
Lucy died aged 66 and was buried 13th December 1857. William died aged 77 and was buried 21st December 1851.
THOMAS FROUD 1835 -
Thomas was born at Hazely Heath and was baptised 1st March 1835. He married Emma Horn daughter of John Horn a Farmer on 18th April 1857 at Heckfield. They lived in the Heckfield & Mattingly area where Thomas was a Farm Labourer. Their children were born in Hazely. Lucy was baptised 4th October 1857, Henry baptised 8th August 1859. William was baptised 3rd February 1861, Agnes Ann baptised 6th March 1864, but sadly died aged 1 year and was buried 29th January 1865. Thomas born 1866, Minnie born 1869.
The 1871 census shows the family living in Hazely: Thomas Froud aged 36, working as a labourer. wife Emma aged 34, daughter Lucy aged 13, son William aged 10, son Thomas aged 4 and daughter Minnie aged 1.
The following year Emily was born in 1872, and Alice M was born in 1877.
In 1881 according to the census return, the family were living at Mattingly. Thomas age 46 is a Farm Labourer, Emma his wife age 44, Thomas age 15 son is out of work, Minnie age 12 daughter, Emily age 9 daughter, Alice age 4 daughter. Lucy has married and is living in Reading.
The 1891 census shows Thomas now age 56 has become a Brick Maker, Emma age 54, Emily age 18 and Alice M age 13.
Emma died aged 70 of heart disease on 27th April 1907 at Winchfield Union Workhouse. Thomas died aged 84 on 9th October 1919, he was living with his son-in-law William Slatter at 107 Queens Road, Reading. He died of Acute Pneumonia.
THOMAS FROUD 1866 -
Thomas was the third child of Thomas Froud and Emma Horn, he was born at Hazely in 1866. Thomas married Hephzibah Sarah Williams daughter of Moses Williams 14th July 1888. Their first child Florence was born in March 1891, but it seems that Thomas and Hephzibah also raised their nephew Percy J Williams born 1888. (see 1891 & 1901 census below)
The 1891 census for Hazely Heath shows Thomas Froud, head, aged 24, Brick maker, born at Hazely Heath. Hephzibah S, wife, aged 22, born at Donhead St Mary, Wilts. Florence E, daughter, aged 1 month, born at Donhead St Mary, Wilts. Percy J Williams, nephew, aged 3, born at Sholling, Hants.
Their next child Tom was born 16th December 1892 reputedly in the attic of the Shoulder of Mutton public house in Hazely Heath, his mother stated her name was Sarah on his birth certificate. Hilda was born 1898 at Mattingly, Jack was born 1899 also at Mattingly. During the next year they moved to Hook Common, Newham where Robert was born 1900, Fred was born March 1901.
The 1901 census shows the family now living at Hook Common, Newham. Thomas Froud, head, aged 34, Brick layer, born at Mattingly. Hephzibah S Froud, wife, aged 32, born at Donhead, Wilts. Florence E, daughter, aged 10, born at Mattingly. Tom, son, aged 8, born at Mattingly. Hilda, daughter, aged 3, born at Mattingly. Jack, son, aged 2, born at Mattingly. Robert, son, aged 1, born at Newham. Fred, son, aged 2 weeks, born at Newham. Percy Williams, nephew, aged 13, Errand Boy, born at Sholling.
Two more children were born. Sidney Harold in 1905 and Eleanor Lucy in 1906. Hephzibah Sarah died between 1906 and 1911.
The 1911 census, Sunday 2nd April 1911. Extra information on this census, states that Thomas was married to Hephzibah for 24 years, she is sadly not on this census. Also that they had 10 children, only 8 now survive. The family's house had 4 rooms. Address looks like West View Hook Winchfield Hants. Signed by Thomas Froud.
The census is: Thomas Froud aged 44 a widower working as a bricklayer in the building industry, born at Mattingly. Florence Emily his daughter aged 20, born at Mattingly. Tom his son aged 18 working as a fitter at an iron foundry, born at Mattingly. Hilda his daughter aged 13 a scholar, born at Mattingly. Jack his son aged 12 a scholar, born at Mattingly. Robert his son aged 11 a scholar, born at Newnham. Frederick his son aged 10 a scholar, born at Newnham. Sidney Harold son aged 6 a scholar born at Newnham. Eleanor Lucy daughter aged 5, born at Newnham.
THOMAS FROUD 1892 - 1953
Thomas or Tom as his birth certificate states was born on Friday 16th December 1892 at Hazely, Heckfield, Hampshire. He was reportedly born in the Shoulder of Mutton at Hazely although this cannot be proved. Thomas married his cousin Ethel Maud Slatter daughter of William Slatter and Lucy Froud, at The Church of St John the Evangelist in Reading on 20th September 1919. He was 26 years old and an Engineer, living at 23 Kingsgate Street, Reading. The witnesses were William Slatter, Phyllis Hancock and Ethel's sister Lillian Kate Hoad.
Thomas and Ethel moved to 28 Goodden Crescent, Farnborough, where Thomas worked at the R.A.E., Their first child Margaret Phyllis was born in 1921. Their 2nd child Kenneth Thomas was born 4 years later in 1925, the family moved to Chelsea Cottage, Fellows Road, Farnborough. Thomas then had a house built at 40 Marrowbrook Lane, in Cove. The house was named 'Erleigh' after an area of Reading, not to be confused with the village of Earley just outside Reading.
Ethel died age 49 in March 1946. His daughter Margaret lived with him until his death aged 60 on 19th August 1953, he was buried at St John's church in Cove on 24th August 1953.
MARGARET PHYLLIS FROUD 1921 - 1990
Margaret Phyllis was born at home on Saturday 10th September 1921 at 28 Goodden Crescent. She was 4 years old when her brother Kenneth was born in 1925. They moved to Chelsea Cottages, Fellows Road, and from there to a new house her father Thomas had built in Marrowbrook Lane, named 'Erleigh'.
Margaret was 25 years old when her mother Ethel died in 1946. She stayed with her father, a few years later she met John a married man, who never left his wife. He was a Taxi Driver with his own Company. Margaret was pregnant when her father died in August 1953, her child Leslie John was born 17th December 1953, the day after her father's birthday. Margaret and her brother Kenneth inherited the house in Marrowbrook Lane, and 5 years later she had another child by John, Roger Noel born 9th January 1959. John would visit often and take the boys out in his Taxi. he died in 1965 of a heart attack aged 53 years. Margaret was left with 2 young sons to bring up, they grew a lot of their own food in the garden and picked fruit from their Orchard. Margaret was always known as Mrs. Froud and was famous for giving away surplus apples and runner beans. Margaret suffered a Stroke and never really recovered, she went to live in a home in Aldershot near her son Leslie. The house was sold. Margaret died age 69 in 1990.
