GEORGE CHAMPION 1846 - 1880
George was the 7th child of Alfred Champion and Charlotte Dare, he was born 13th March 1846 at Stoke St Gregory. George followed in the family trade and became a Mason. George married Ann Winchester a daughter of Samuel and Charlotte Winchester. George & Charlotte had 6 children. Walter born in April or May 1873, he sadly died aged 3 months and was buried 21st July 1872. Two years later twins Oliver and Albert were born 9th November 1874 and baptised 20th November 1874, Frank was baptised 1st October 1876, Amelia was baptised 27th October 1878 and Fanny was baptised 28th November 1880.
Sadly George died from Tuberculosis on 10th December 1880 aged just 34, leaving his wife Charlotte aged 29 to bring up four young children and a baby.
The 1881 census shows the family living at Hookbridge, Stoke St. Gregory. Ann Champion, head, widow, aged 29, Agricultural Labourer. Oliver Champion, son, aged 6, Scholar. Albert Champion, son, aged 6, Scholar. Frank Champion, son, aged 4, Scholar. Amelia Champion, daughter, aged 2. Fanny Champion, daughter, aged 5 months. All were born at Stoke St Gregory.
Walter was staying with his grandparents at the Bull's Head Inn, Stanmoor Road, Stoke St Gregory. Samuel Winchester, head, aged 53, Inn Keeper, born at Bristol. Charlotte Winchester, wife, aged 52, born at Burrow Bridge. Samuel Winchester, son, aged 34, unmarried, Agricultural Labourer, born at Burrow Bridge, Emily Winchester, daughter, aged 20, unmarried, born at Burrow Bridge and Walter Champion, grand son, aged 7, Scholar, born at Burrow Bridge.
OLIVER CHAMPION 1874 - 1925
Oliver was a twin brother to Albert, first sons of George Champion and Ann Winchester. They were born on the 9th November 1874 at Stoke St Gregory, Oliver was born at 10pm. Oliver broke with family tradition and became a Packer on the Railway. He married Florence Mabel Pocock on 11th March 1901 at Taunton. They had 5 children. George Henry born 28th December 1901, Sidney, Frank, Florence and May.
Oliver died on 30th December 1925 aged 51.
GEORGE HENRY CHAMPION 1901 - 1971
George Henry was the first child of Oliver Champion and Florence Mabel Pocock, he was born 28th December 1901. George Henry worked for the River Authority as a Chargehand. He married Lillian Gwendoline Martin on 23rd December 1922 at Bridgwater Register Office. They had 5 daughters, Lilian May who married Frederick Chidley and had 3 children. Kathleen Ivy who married James Henry Taylor and had three children. Doris Pansy Eileen who married Rayford James and had 7 children. Elsie Myrtle who married Norman Frederick Lock and had 6 children. Violet Primrose who marreid Anthony Hill and had 2 children.
George Henry died of a heart attack on 6th November 1971.
