JONATHAN GAITES
Jonathan I don't believe was born at Stoke St Gregory. He first appears when he married Mary Kinglake on 1st September 1692. Jonathan and Mary had 5 children. Jonathan baptised 6th April 1693, Ann baptised 22nd October 1695, buried 29th January 1754. Jane baptised 31st May 1698, Thomas baptised 26th January 1700. Mary baptised 19th June 1706. There are three burial entries in the Stoke St Gregory registers that I'm not sure about, Susanna Gait buried 19th February 1698 possibly his mother? and Mary Gayt buried 5th February 1709, this could be Jonathan's wife or daughter. Thomas Gait buried 13th May 1705 possibly his father? . Jonathan was buried 17th August 1729.
JONATHAN GAIT 1693 - 1762
Jonathan was the first child of Jonathan Gaites and Mary Kinglake, he was born at Stoke St Gregory and baptised there on 6th April 1693. Jonathan married Hannah Wilmot on 1st May 1718, but she died 4 months later and was buried on 25th September 1718. Jonathan then married Thomasin Andrews on 1st August 1719. They had 5 children. Susanna baptised 28th September 1721, John baptised 30th November 1723, Mary baptised 12th June 1727, Jane baptised 20th September 1730, Thomas baptised 3rd December 1732. Again the burials listed could apply to Jonathan's children or Siblings above. Thomas Gaite buried 28th June 1730, Jane Gaite buried 20th June 1731, Thomas Gaite buried 20th May 1733 and Mary Gaite buried 26th November 1734. Jonathan's wife Thomasin was buried 22nd May 1737.
Two months later Jonathan married Elizabeth Green on the 19th July 1737, at Stoke St Gregory. They had two children, Jane who was baptised 5th March 1738, she married Abraham Champion of Curry Rivel . Ann was baptised 17th February 1740. Tragedy struck again when Elizabeth died, she was buried 12th July 1741. Jonathan's daughter Mary was buried 21st April 1745.
Jonathan then married Ann. Their first child was Jonathan, baptised 18th September 1748, then David baptised 24th June 1753, Solomon baptised 7th December 1755, Ann baptised 24th December 1758. John died aged 69, and was buried 27th June 1762.
JONATHAN GAIT 1748 -
Jonathan was the first child of Jonathan Gait and Ann, from his fathers 4th marriage. He was baptised at Stoke St Gregory on 18th September 1748. Jonathan married Rachel Sawtell on the 12th February 1777. They had 8 children, John baptised April 1779, buried 11th April 1779. John baptised 26th September 1780, John married Ann Fudge on 4th October 1808. Jane baptised 25th December 1782, Mary baptised 29th May 1785, buried 31st December 1788 pauper. Ann baptised 15th March 1789 pauper. Mary baptised 13th March 1791 poor. Sarah baptised 19th May 1793 poor. Rachel baptised 9th July 1797. The registers recorded pauper and poor after the entries for those families who could not pay the 3d required by law. Jonathan died aged 51, he was buried 3rd February 1799.
JANE GAIT 1782 -
Jane was the 3rd child of Jonathan Gait and Rachel Sawtell, she was baptised 25th December 1782. Jane had a son Robert Gait baptised at Stoke St Gregory on 28th December 1806, aged 2 years, base born, he died aged 3, and was buried 27th March 1808. Jane many years later had a daughter, the parish register of Stoke St Gregory reads: 16th April 1824 - Louisa - daughter of - Jane Gate - single woman. There is another baptism for Louisa on 3rd July 1825. I'm not sure at present if both baptisms are for the same child or different children.
ANN GAIT 1789 -
Ann was the 5th child of Jonathan Gait and Rachel Sawtell she was baptised at Stoke St Gregory 15th March 1789. She had an illegitimate child, William Gait baptised 28th December 1806 and then later a son John Chedzoy Gait who was born 23rd January 1813 and baptised at North Curry on 15th March 1817, by Ann, which was after her marriage to Agricultural Labourer and Mason John Chedzoy son of Levi Chedzoy and Ann Pearce, at North Curry on 4th May 1816. John and Ann went on to have lots of children, so did John's nephew John Chedzoy who married his cousin Ann. See John Chedzoy or go to the John and Ann Page.
MARY GAIT 1791 -
Mary was the 6th child of Jonathan Gait and Rachel Sawtell, she was baptised on 13th March 1791. Mary may have married William Buddle of Wilton, Taunton. The Banns were read at Stoke St Gregory on 17th, 24th & 31st March 1811. They didn't marry at Stoke St Gregory.
RACHEL GAIT 1797? -
Rachel was the youngest child of Jonathan Gait and Rachel Sawtell, she was baptised 17th July 1797. I don't believe she was a baby at the time, as I have found a marriage for her, to William Pearce on 29th December 1810. Which would have made her age 13 years. One of the witnesses was Abraham Champion.
