Stephen was born about 1843, he became a Miller. Aged 28 he married Jane Froud daughter of John Froud on 5th July 1871, both signed their names, witnesses were John Froud and Susan ...?.

The 1881 census shows them living next door to Jane's parents at Grouse Green. Stephen Gould, head, Journeyman Miller, aged 38 born at Elvetham. Jane his wife aged 31, born at Hazeley. Annie E. daughter aged 8, Scholar, born at Heckfield. Edith M daughter, aged 6, Scholar, born at Heckfield. Sarah Benham, Boarder, widow, aged 88, born at Heckfield. (we believe that Sarah Benham is Jane's grandmother)
