HENRY JOHN SCANES

HENRY JOHN SCANES 1840 -

Henry John was the 3rd child of Henry Scanes and Elizabeth Martyn, he was born at Broadclist and baptised on 13th March 1840. His father was a Farmer, Farming 90 Acres and he employed 4 labourers. Henry John I suspect had a good childhood, growing up on the farm, he was also a Scholar, the family employed a House Servant and a Farm Servant who lived with them. (information taken from 1851 census).

I do not have a lot of information about Henry John, but the 1881 census shows him age 42, and a Farmer of 180 Acres, employing 2 men and a boy, his wife Ann (formally Mandley) age 50, was also born at Broad Clyst, step son William Mandley age 26, born at Broad Clyst and servant George James age 14, born at Broad Clyst.
