HENRY SCANES

HENRY SCANES 1810 - (information taken from 1851 census and IGI)

Henry was baptised on 30th July 1810 at Ide, he was the 2nd child of Henry Scanes and Elizabeth Tuck. He married Elizabeth Martyn from Broadclist on 13th October 1834 at the Holy Trinity church, Exeter. They stayed in Broadclist and raised their family, Elizabeth Mary was baptised 12th August 1835, Charlotte was born 20th August 1837 and was baptised 27th September 1837, Henry John was baptised 13th March 1840 and Samuel Tuck was baptised 27th July 1842.

The 1851 census shows the family living at Trow Farm, Broadclist, Henry age 40, is a Farmer of 90 Acres employing 4 labourers, Elizabeth his wife age 33, Elizabeth Mary age 15, a scholar, Charlotte age 13, a scholar, Henry age 11, a scholar, and Samuel Tuck age 9, a scholar, also Mary Pratt age 17, a House Servant, born at Bradninch, and James Pollard age 21, a Farm Servant, born at Broadclist.

(from information supplied by Colin Davis) Henry Scanes and his family were living at Farthings Farm, Broadclyst, which he owned at the time Charlotte was born in 1837. Later moving to Trow Farm and then back to Farthings Farm when Elizabeth Mary married. Henry also owned The New Inn Public House at Broadclyst, a copy of his will is to be found there.
