A HUGGINS FAMILY IN MILTON 1600's
This family appears in the early Milton Parish registers, but I'm not sure if they fit in with my family yet.
JOHN HUGGINS ? - 1678
John Huggins married Sarah ?. They lived at Milton during the mid 1600's and had 3 children baptised at Milton. Their first child John was baptised 18th August 1658. William was baptised 4 years later on 24th May 1662 and Richard was baptised 3 years after that on 10th November 1665. Sarah was Godmother to George Stonehouse at his baptism on 11th June 1669 son of George Stonehouse Esq and his wife Ann.
John Huggins I believe was not a pauper, his name is written on two occasions in lists of donations collected by the church for "the redeeming of Christians taken by Turkish Pyrates" 1670 and for "the Rebuilding of St Pauls church London" 15th September 1678. on each occasion he gave 4d. His wife Sarah also gave 2d for "ye poor Captives in Algiers" 16th September 1680.
John Huggins died December 1678, his burial on the 18th December 1678 is notable, as he was the first person in the parish of Milton to be buried according to the new act of Parliment, being that everyone was to be buried with a Woollen shroud, he was attended by Anne Scarlet and Joan King and they made their affidavit on 23rd December 1678. John's widow Sarah was buried 22nd July 1684 also according to the act.
JOHN HUGGINS 1658 -
John Huggins married Elinor Green from Blewberry on 25th October 1685 at Milton. Their daughter Mary was baptised on 5th November 1687, the page is not very clear to read, and I first thought she was baptised in August. It would seem that poor Elinor died as a result of giving birth as she was buried on 13th August 1687. Although no mention is made as to her cause of death, also the baptism does not state that John was now a widow!.
John seems to have disappeared from the Milton Parish Registers, so I have assumed he moved away, possibly married again and had more children.
WILLIAM HUGGINS 1662 -1693
William Huggins married Mary Green on 27th May 1688 at Milton. (I'm not sure if Elinor and Mary were sisters, it would be interesting to find out). Their son William was baptised 25th November 1689. I have found no more children.
William was buried 8th February 1693.
RICHARD HUGGINS 1665 - 1693
Richard the youngest of the 3 brothers never married as far as I can tell, he died a month after his brother William and was buried on 5th March 1693.
WILLIAM HUGGINS 1689 -
William Huggins son of William Huggins and Mary Green, became a Blacksmith, I have no way of knowing at present if this was a family trade or not. He married Mary Gardiner on 1st May 1714.
MARY HUGGINS 1687 -
Mary Huggins only daughter of John Huggins and Elinor Green married John Winchester a day labourer from Efeley in Oxfordshire, on 31st October 1737.
The Huggins family disappear from the MIlton Parish Registers until 1785 when John Huggins moved here with his wife Jane Barnes, and baptised their first child John on 13th February 1785, it from this family that my husband is descended. see Huggins family tree.
