ISSACHER CHEDZOY

Ancestors of Julie Chedgzoy and Chris Chedgzoy

ISSACHER CHEDZOY 1771 - 1839

Issacher was the 4th child of Levi Chedzoy and Ann Pearce, he was baptised at Stoke St Gregory church 24th March 1771. He married Charlotte Baynham on 11th May 1796. The entry in the marriage register was written as Chedzoy, but Issacher signed his name Chedgzoy. They had 6 children, the first 3 were baptised together at Stoke St Gregory church on the 21st May 1809. Sarah was born 1806 she was baptised age 3 years her brother Richard was born 1807 and was baptised age 2 years. John was born 1809. All three were baptised together on 21st May 1809. Charlotte was born 1811 and was baptised at 9 months old on 29th December 1811. Thomas was born 1814 and baptised on 19th December 1814. Elizabeth was born 1817 and was baptised on the 20th July 1817.

Issacher became Yeoman at Stoke St Gregory, his wife Charlotte died age 67 of Dropsy on 4th October 1838. She was buried on 10th October 1838.  Issacher died the following year, age 68 of "decline" with his daughter Rachel present, on 26th July 1839 he was buried at Stoke St Gregory on 2nd August 1839.

JOHN CHEDZOY 1796,1809 - 1868

John Chedzoy 3rd child of Issacher Chedzoy and Charlotte Baynham was baptised with his older sister and brother at Stoke St Gregory church on 21st May 1809. The 1851 & 1861 census returns show that John was born 1796, as no age was given on his baptism record, it is difficult to say which date is right, but presumably John knew how old he was.  John married his cousin Ann Chedgzoy daughter of Levi Chedzoy and Mary Champion at Stoke St Gregory on 15th October 1821. The 'g' in the Chedzoy name, was put in when John married Ann and has remained in this line ever since.

The children of John Chedzoy and Ann Chedgzoy are difficult to ascertain as John's uncle John Chedzoy also married an Ann (Gait). between them they baptised 22 children at Stoke St Gregory. Both sets of parents were Labourers so we can't separate them that way, nor can we by the spelling of Chedzoy or Chedgzoy as this is not consistent with either family. These are the children that Julie Chedgzoy believes belong to this couple. James baptised 25th September 1822, Eliza baptised 27th June 1830, Charles was baptised 5th June 1825, Daniel baptised 21st August 1831, Edmund baptised 25th July 1833, John baptised 2nd August 1835, Noah baptised 3rd September 1837 but sadly died aged 1 year and was buried 11th November 1838, Dinah baptised 16th August 1840, she married Henry Parsons on 18th April 1861 at Fivehead. The 1851 census shows John and his family living at Woodhill, Stoke St Gregory. John Chedzey, head, aged 33, agricultural labourer. Ann Chedzey, wife, aged 32. Daniel Chedzey, son, aged 19, agricultural labourer. Edmund Chedzey, son, aged 15, agricultural labourer. Dinah Chedzey, daughter, aged 12, scholar. Harriett Chedzey, daughter, aged 10. George Chedzey, son, aged 6.

By 1861 John & Ann with son George were living at Wood Hill with their son Daniel and wife Selina and 2 grand children, Charles and Mary Ann.

John died from Acute Bronchitis on 19th February 1868 he was 72 years old and still a Farm Labourer. He was buried on 23rd February 1868. His wife Ann moved to Woodhill Road, and stayed with Alfred & Marie Joyce, the 1881 census shows this, Alfred Joyce, head, age 49, Platelayer on Railway, born at Netherbury, Dorset. Marie Joyce, wife, age 59, born at Five head, Somerset. Mary Joyce, daughter, age 17, Domestic Servant, born Bridport, Dorset. Ellen Wheadon, daughter, age 11, Scholar, born Stoke St Gregory. Alice Wheadon, daughter, age 14, Crippled, born at Bridport, Dorset. Ann Chedzoy, Boarder, Widow, age 82, Pauper, born at Stoke St Gregory. Henry Wheadon, son, age 18, Farm Labourer, born at Stoke St Gregory.

Ann Chedzoy died of old age 85 years on 19th August 1886.

  JOHN CHEDGZOY 1835 - 1874

John was the 5th child of John Chedzoy and Ann Chedgzoy, he was born in 1835 and was  baptised 2nd August 1835 at Stoke St Gregory. John went to London, he married Sarah Caroline Odell daughter  of James Odell on 30th June 1861 at Islington, Middlesex, London. The couple had 8 children, John James born 14th October 1861, Islington, Harriet Elizabeth  born 4th January 1864, Holloway, London, the family then moved to Alfred Street, Birmingham.  George Harry was born 20th May 1866, baptised 15th June 1873, he married Minnette Collins 16th June 1889. Ada was born 12th August 1867, baptised 8th September 1867, Harriet was born 15th February 1869, Henry George (Harry) was born 4th October 1869, William born 13th July 1870, Elizabeth Caroline born 5th November 1875, baptised 16th November 1876 at Ladypool Lane, Birmingham.

John was a Gardener and later a Coachman. John died on 14th July 1874 at Alfred Street, Birmingham. It seems that after his death, his wife conceived again, Elizabeth was born November the following year. Sarah died aged 75 on 18th June 1912.
