JAMES CHEDZOY

JAMES CHEDZOY 1820 - 1878

James was the 2nd child of James Chedzoy and Sarah Willmont. He was baptised 24th December 1820. When he was 28 he married Elizabeth Hoel daughter of William Hoel on 6th December 1848. James signed his name and Elizabeth made her mark, witnessed by Samuel Richards and James Hoel who made his mark. James Chedzoy like the rest of his family was a Mason. 

The 1851 census shows James living at Stoke St Gregory. James Chedzoy, head, aged 30, Mason. Elizabeth Chedzoy, wife, aged 28, needlewoman.

They had 3 children, Samuel baptised 31st May 1856, Mary Ann baptised 3rd January 1858 and Cuthbert baptised 18th March 1860.

James was buried at Stoke St Gregory church 6th December 1878 aged 58 years. James' wife Elizabeth is on the 1881 census living at Meare Green, Elizabeth Chedzoy widow, age 59, Laundress. Samuel Chedzoy, unmarried age 24, Mason Sexton.

SAMUEL CHEDZOY 1856 - 1931

Samuel was the first child of James Chedzoy and Elizabeth Hoel, he was baptised on 31st May 1856. Samuel became a Mason like his father, when he was 21 his father James died, he stayed with his mother at Meare Green, shown on the 1881 census. He married Selina Gapper Musgrave daughter of William Gapper Musgrave on 7th December 1881.  The Banns for their marriage were read during November at St Michaels church at Burrow Bridge. They stayed in Stoke St Gregory and raised their 12 children. Elizabeth Ann and William James both baptised 11th March 1883, Selina Mary baptised 4th December 1884, Emily Rhoda baptised 29th August 1886, Eli Samuel baptised 19th August 1888, Frederick Charles baptised 31st August 1890, Frances Ellen & Eliza Margaret both baptised 30th September 1894, Edith Maud baptised 30th August 1896, Ada Lilian baptised 6th February 1898, Ella Sophia and Beatrice Mabel both baptised on 29th August 1902.

The 1901 census shows the family still at Mear Green:- Samuel Chedzoy, head, age 44, Mason/Sexton. Selina, wife, age 43. William J, son, age 18, Masons Son. Emily Rhoda, daughter, age 14. Eli Samuel, son, age 12. Frederick Charles, son, age 10. Frances Ellen, daughter, age 9. Eliza Margaret, daughter, age 8. Edith Maud, daughter, age 6. Ada Lilian, daughter, age 3. Ella Sophia, daughter, age 1. Elizabeth Chedzoy, Mother, widow, age 78, Retired Laundress, born North Curry.

SELINA MARY CHEDZOY 1884 - (information from Vanessa Miller)

Selina Mary married George Linton and had a daughter Emily in 1909.
