JERVIS FAMILY TREE

My thanks to a friend in Dunsford for sending me details from the Dunsford registers.

JOHN JERVAS

I am not sure when John was born, it could be either 1700 or 1703. his father was Charles or Jeremy. However, John married Jane Taverner at Dunsford on 23rd June 1737.   Their first child was John baptised 14th March 1737/8 at Dunsford, followed by  Jeremy was baptised 7th May 1740, then William was baptised 29th January 1744. There was a gap before Mary was baptised 9th January 1755. 

WILLIAM JERVIS 1744 - 1807

William was the son of John Jervis and Jane Taverner, he was baptised at Dunsford 29th January 1744.

William married Honor Seaward at Dunsford on 6th July 1779. The couple stayed in Dunsford and raised their family of 7 children. John baptised 26th February 1782, then Mary was baptised 28th November 1784 but sadly died aged 3 months, she was buried 24th February 1785. William was baptised privately on 5th April 1786 and then publicly on 25th April 1786. Mary was baptised 26th March 1788. Jane Jenny was baptised privately at Cheriton Bishop and then received into the church at Dunsford on 23rd February 1790. Ann was baptised 14th May 1792 and Martha was baptised 17th August 1795. 

William and Honor moved to Crediton at some point. William died 5th November 1807 aged 63, he was buried at Dunsford 10th November 1807. Honor died 2nd March 1831 aged 72 and she is also buried with her husband at Dunsford on 9th March 1831. Their grave stone is next to a path near the church.

WILLIAM JERVIS 1786 - 1873 (information taken mainly from 1851 census)

William was born at the beginning of April 1786 at Dunsford. He was baptised privately on the 5th April then publicly on 25th April.  William married Mary Holman at Tedburn St Mary 27th December 1809. Their first child Mary Ann was baptised at Tedburn St Mary 21st April 1812, she married Thomas Diggines. William was baptised 20th September 1814 then again on 10th October 1814. Harriet was baptised 1st January 1817 at Tedburn St Mary. Jane was born 2nd August 1818 and Miriam was born 11th September 1820. They moved to Dunsford where I found the family on the 1821 census, living at West Land in the North Quarter of Dusnford. William was a Farmer, employing 3 Servants and had 2 Apprentices. (transcribed by Fay Sampson Priestley, see the Genuki website) John was born 30th June 1822, Daniel was born 10th July 1824, but he sadly died aged 1 year, buried 9th April 1826. Daniel Holman was born 11th September 1826. Martha was born 18th June 1829. The family moved to Pilt Farm, Doddiscombesleigh which was 50 Acres. Their youngest son Jeremiah was born about 1833.

The 1841 census shows the family living at Pilt, Doddiscombesleigh, William Jervis age 54, Farmer. his wife Mary age 52, son John age 19, son Daniel age 14, daughter Martha age 12, son Jeremiah age 8, Sarah Cann age 4, William Back age 19, John Sercombe age 15, male servant, Charlotte Gibson age 19 and James Hore age 11.

The 1851 census shows the family still living at Pilt Farm, Doddiscombesleigh, William age 65, Farmer of 50 Acres employing 2 Labourers. Mary his wife age 63, Harriet age 33 and unmarried, John age 28 and unmarried, Daniel age 24 and unmarried, Martha age 22 and unmarried, Jeremiah age 18 and unmarried, a visitor William Jervis Diggins age 4 a scholar born in Doddiscombesleigh, a visitor Mary Jane Hancock age 3 and a scholar born at London, and Apprentice James Bennett age 18 and unmarried, agricultural labourer born at Exeter.

The 1861 census for Doddiscombesleigh. The family are living at Ponsford Farm. William Jervis, head, Widow, aged 75, retired Farmer, born at Dunsford. Daniel Jervis, son, unmarried, aged 34, Farmers son, born at Dunsford. Jeremiah Jervis, son, unmarried, aged 28, born at Dunsford. Allice Grace Lockman, age 29, Housekeeper, born at Harburton. Charlotte Lockman, visitor, aged 23, born at Harburton. Stephen Diggins, grandson, aged 13, born at Doddiscombesleigh. William Hore, servant, aged 50, Agricultural Labourer, born at Ide. Elizabeth Marshall, servant, aged 14, born at Exeter.

I found William on the 1871 census, he was lodging at Megley Pool Cottage, Doddiscombesleigh with son in law Thomas Diggins and his family. William is recorded as a widower aged 85, and a retired Farmer.

William died age 87 years on 7th July 1873, he is buried at Doddiscombesleigh Church, his wife Mary is also buried there with 2 other William Jervis', the gravestone was too badly worn to see any dates. (see Doddiscombesleigh gravestone inscriptions)

MARTHA JERVIS 1828 - 1898

Martha was born about 1828, in Dunsford. She was the youngest daughter of William & Mary Jervis. Her father was a Farmer, they moved to Pilt Farm, Doddiscombesleigh before she was 4 years old. Martha married Farmers son John N Sercombe of Perry Farm, Doddiscombesleigh, at Doddiscombesleigh church on 8th July 1852. One of the witnesses was her brother Daniel Jervis. Martha settled at Perry Farm with her husbands family, they had 10 children, Miriam born 1853, John born 1854, Lucy Mary born 1856, William born 1858, Ellen born 1860, Jesse born 1862, Claire born 1864, Harriet Ann born 1866, Charles born 1869 and Frederick born 1870. There must have been great sadness in the family when Ellen died age 16 on 6th May 1875.

The 1881 census shows there was a visitor at the Farm, Jeremiah Jervis age 48 living on his own means. Martha at this time was 52 years old, It was her younger brother, he was ill and she nursed him till his death 2 years later, he died on 1st June 1883.He is buried at Doddiscombesleigh. Martha died age 70 on 24th September 1898, she is buried at Doddiscombesleigh with her daughter Ellen, her husband joined them later.
