JAMES JEWELL 1842 - 1901+

James was born 2nd April 1842 at Wolverton Lane, Kingsclere, and baptised 1st May 1842 son of William Jewell & Harriet Smith. He married Elizabeth Rolfe on 25th March 1865 at St Mary's church, Kingsclere, witnessed by George May and Sarah Rolfe her sister. Elizabeth already had a daughter Sarah Rolfe baptised 31st May 1863 which was Trinity Sunday. James and Elizabeth went to live at Dunt Lane, Hurst, Berkshire, where they raised their family. William was baptised on 24th December 1865 at St Nicholas Church, Hurst, he became a Private in the Royal Horse Artillery. Henry John was baptised 28th July 1867. Jane Elizabeth was baptised 25th April 1869. George was baptised 9th April 1871.

The 1871 census was taken on 2nd April, It shows the family living at Dunt Lane, Hurst. James aged 30, Elizabeth aged 25, Sarah aged 8, William aged 5, Henry aged 4, Jane aged 2 and George aged 3 months. Mary Ann was baptised 8th September 1872. Ellen was baptised 13th September 1874. Jesse was baptised 9th April 1876. Rosina was baptised 9th December 1877. Edith Fanny was born about 1880 but died before the 1881 census was taken.

By the 1881 census, the older children had left home. The family had moved to Little Hill, Hurst. James aged 40, Elizabeth aged 38, Jane aged 13, George aged 11, Mary A aged 9, Ellen aged 7, Jesse aged 5, Rosa aged 3. James was baptised 19th November 1882, he married Nellie Rose Clacy about 1911. The family moved to Wokingham where Edith was born about 1884. Florence Amy was born 21st January 1886 at King Street, Winnersh, Berkshire. Alfred was born about 1887 at Barkham, Berkshire.

By the 1891 census they had moved to Barkham, Berkshire, and some of the family had returned home. James aged 54 was a Farm Bailiff, Elizabeth aged 52, William aged 25 a Private in the Royal Horse Artillery, Harry aged 24 a Farm Carter, Jane aged 22 a Laundress, George aged 21 a Farm Carter, Mary aged 19, Ellen aged 17, Jesse aged 15, Rose aged 12 a scholar, James aged 8 a scholar, Edith aged 6 a scholar, Florence aged 4 and Alfred aged 3.

The 1901 census reveals they had moved again, they were now living at Langley Common, Barkham, Berkshire. James aged 57 working as a Carter on a Farm, Elizabeth aged 56, Florence A. aged 15 and Alfred aged 12.
