JOHN CHEDZOY

JOHN CHEDZOY 1776 -

John was the 5th child of Levi Chedzoy and Ann Pearce. He was baptised at Stoke St Gregory church on 22nd September 1776. John met Ann Gait from North Curry, and they had an illegitimate child, John born 23rd January 1813. John married Ann Gait the daughter of Jonathan Gait on 4th May 1816 at North Curry. Their son John was baptised at North Curry on 15th March 1817 as John Chedzoy Gait by Ann and stated as illegitimate. Their next child Thomas was baptised 25th December 1817, followed 2 years later by we think twins Mary and Martha baptised 14th November 1819.

It would seem that John & Ann had 10 children, although I am not sure about all their names as John's nephew John Chedgzoy son of Issacher married his cousin Ann Chedzoy daughter of Levi, both the John and Ann couples had children and between them they baptised 21 children. (information from Maureen Martin from Tasmania) Thomas it seems was a naughty boy and was caught House breaking. He was tried at the Somerset Quarter Sessions on 6th July 1840 and sent to Van Diemen's land as a convict. Archives Office of Tasmania (AOT) references: CON 33/13 & CON 14/9. Thomas Chedgoy age 24. Crime: House breaking. Father: John. Mother: Ann. Brothers: 5 (not named). Sisters: 4, (not named). Native Place: Stokes.

John died age 71 and was buried at Stoke St Gregory 30th September 1847.

 JOHN CHEDZOY GAIT 1813 - ancestor of Bonnie Goyette

John Chedzoy Gait was the illegitimate son of John Chedzoy and Ann Gait, he was born on 23rd January 1813, at North Curry and baptised by his mother on 15th March 1817. John met Mary Ann Adams and like his father before him also had an illegitimate child. His baptism is recorded at North Curry on 24th September 1843, as John Chedzoy son of Mary Ann Adams, of North Curry, spinster. John married Mary Ann Adams the daughter of John & Mary Adams at North Curry on 25th December 1845. They were both living at Lillesdon, North Curry.

The couple went on to have 7 more children. The first 3 were baptised with the surname Gait. Anna age 2 was baptised 23rd July 1848 with her sister Louisa.  James was baptised 13th January 1850. The 1851 census for the Tything of Lillesdon shows that the family were now using the name Chedzoy. John Chedzoy, head, age 37, Agricultural Labourer, wife Mary A, age 32, son John age 7, daughter Anna age 4, daughter Louisa age 2, and son James. The last 4 children were baptised with the surname Chedzoy. Charles baptised 17th October 1852, Mary Ann baptised 6th January 1856, Mary was born January 1858 but sadly died aged 2 weeks, and was buried 7th February 1858. Tom was baptised 23rd November 1860. Mary Ann was very ill after the birth of Tom and died as a result 6 days later on 10th November 1860, aged 40. Her death certificate gives her name as Mary Ann Chedzoy wife of John Chedzoy, Farm Labourer. Mary Ann was buried 18th November 1860. The 1861 census shows John Chedzoy, head, widow, age 47, Agricultural Labourer, son James age 10, son Charles age 8, daughter Mary Ann age 5, and son Tom age 2.

 JOHN CHEDZOY ADAMS 1843 - 1914

John Chedzoy Adams was the illegitimate child of Mary Ann Adams and John Chedzoy Gait. He was born at North Curry and baptised on 24th September 1843. His mother did marry his father and the 1851 census shows that they used the Chedzoy name, although his 3 oldest siblings were baptised with the name Gait.

By 1861 John had left home. He married Mary Jane Kellett on 3rd May 1875 in Yorkshire. John and his family always used the name Adams. They had 5 children, John Thomas born 18th February 1876, Joseph born 17th November 1877, James born 17th July 1879, Elizabeth Ann born 23rd March 1881, all 4 were born in Yorkshire, Beatrice was born 29th June 1884 in Lancashire.  Mary Jane died 20th July 1885. John took John Thomas, Joseph and Elizabeth Ann to Canada in 1887 or 1888, it is believed that James and Beatrice may have died.  

John married Mary Minnie Robbins on 3rd June 1889 at Victoria, B.C. Canada. John had another 4 children with Mary, Beatrice born October 1892, but she sadly died before she was a year old, in September 1893, Lillian was born 21st September 1894, Edward, and Minnie born 7th November 1904, the last 3 children lived long lives.

John died on 3rd June 1914 at Victoria B.C. and is buried at Ross Bay cemetery.
