JOHN PESTER CRUSE

JOHN PESTER CRUSE 1836 - 1902

John Pester was the 2nd child of John Cruse and Sarah Pester, he was born at Kenton, and baptised on 28th February 1836. John married Fanny Sheppard daughter of William Sheppard, 26th December 1855 at St Sidwells' Exeter.  I found them on the 1861 census living in South Town, Kenton. John aged 25, Blacksmith. Fanny his wife aged 25, Joshua his son aged 4 and William his son aged 2. They had 6 more children Alice G. born 1861, Arthur born 1864, John born 1866, Henry born 1871, Mary Jane born 1874, she married Alfred Merrett. Frederick G. was born 1877.

The 1881 census shows the family living at South Farm, Kenton, John P. age 45 a Blacksmith, born at Kenton, with his wife Fanny age 46 born at Kenton, also their 5 children, Arthur age 16 a General Labourer, John age 14, Henry age 9,a scholar, Mary Jane age 7,a scholar and Fred age 4, a scholar.

Fanny died age 56 on 16th January 1891. The 1891 census shows that they have moved to 21 Exeter Road, Kenton, John P. age 55, a widower and a Blacksmith (employer), daughter Alice age 30 and single, Arthur age 27 and single a general labourer, John age 25 and single working as a Blacksmith, Henry age 20 and single, working as a Blacksmith, Frederick G. age 14 and working as a Blacksmith, and Grand daughter Lillian M. age 4 and a scholar.

John married Mary E Pidgeon a widow, as the 1901 census shows. They are living at Kenton Hill, John P Cruse, aged 65, Blacksmith, born at Kenton. Mary E, wife, aged 48, born at Powerham. Arthur, son, aged 35, single, Agricultural Labourer, born at Kenton. Alice M Pidgeon, step daughter, aged 26, born at Powderham. Lucy Pidgeon, step daughter, aged 13, School Teacher, born at Kenton. John C Pidgeon, grandson, aged 5, born at Kenton. Robert Sparks, Workman, aged 30, Blacksmith, born at Starcross.

I found John and Fanny's gravestone in Kenton Cemetery.  John died age 66 on 3rd June 1902. for gravestone inscription see Kenton page.
