JOHN REMNANT

JOHN REMNANT 1814 -

John was the 5th child of George Remnant and Hannah Mansell, he was baptised in December 1814. He became an Agricultural Labourer like his father. John married Jane Kercher (Kircher) daughter of Samuel Kercher on 14th December 1841. John was of full age and a bachelor, Jane was under age and a spinster. Witnesses to the marriage were George Remnant and Ruth Remnant in St Mary the Virgin Church in Frensham certificate signed by Richard Stephens. Both George Remnant and Samuel Kercher were agricultural Labourers (certificated). John and Jane had 9 children:-

Jane was baptised in April 1842. She appears on the 1881 census for Acton, Middx aged 43 years, unmarried, Cook, out of employ, visiting her sister Eliza Burnet (nee Remnant) at Wells House, Wells Farm, Old Oak Lane, Acton, Middx (Census ref RG11/1353).

Charles was baptised in May 1843

Ruth was baptised in December 1844

Eliza was baptised in September 1846. She married John Burnet of Earlmean, Hants. They appear on the 1881 census for Acton, Middx, Eliza was age 40 years John age 56 years, living at Wells House, Wells Farm, Old Oak Lane, Acton, Middx. John Burnet was a Farm Bailiff (census ref. RG11/1353).

Harriett was baptised in March 1848. She had a son George born 27th October 1867.

Ann was baptised in September 1849

The 1851 census shows the family living at Spreakley, Frensham, John age 36 is an Agricultural Labourer, his wife Jane age 30, daughter Jane age 9, a scholar, Charles age 7, a scholar, Ruth age 5, a scholar, Eliza age 4, Harriett age 3, Ann age 2 and Hannah Remnant, John's mother, widow age 74, a pauper.

George was baptised in June 1851

Mary was baptised in December 1853

James was baptised in May 1855, He married Emma Boxhall and they had 10 children.

The 1871 census shows the family living at Shortfield Common, Frensham, John age 55 is an Agricultural Labourer, Jane his wife is age 49, Mary their daughter is 19 and an out of work Servant, James age 17 is an Agricultural Labourer, and they have a grandson Frederick J age 3months also living with them, (possibly Mary's son).

John died in September 1890 aged 76 years and was buried in Rowledge Churchyard. I found Jane on the 1901 census, living in Rowledge aged 79, living on her own means. She died in 1909 aged 87 years and was buried at Middle Bourne, Surrey.
