JOHN SCANES

JOHN SCANES 1813 - 1866

John was the 3rd child of Henry Scanes and Elizabeth Tuck, he was baptised 11th April 1813 at Ide. John became a Carpenter and Wheelwright like his father. He married Mary Ann Dey daughter of William Dey at Ide church on 16th April 1835. They had a least 3 children Adrian John baptised on 3rd June 1838, Charlotte baptised on 24th  May 1836, she sadly died aged 14 months in July 1837, she was buried at Ide on 16th July 1837. Edmund William. was baptised on 28th August 1842.

The 1841 census shows John and his family living in Ide village, John aged 25 a carpenter, his wife Mary aged 25 and son Adrian aged 3.

The 1851 census shows that they lived at Smalldridge, Ide, close to his brother Samuel Tuck Scanes and his father Henry Scanes. The 1851 census reads :- John Scanes age 38, Wheelwright employing 2 men, born at Ide, his wife Mary A. age 39, born at Ide, son Adrian J. age 12, a scholar, born at Ide, son Edmund W. age 8, at home, born Ide, and Lodger Maria Hart unmarried age 80, born Hatherleigh.

The 1871 census for Ide shows Mary Ann Scanes a widow aged 59 living at Ida Cottage, Ide.

John died aged 55 in July 1866, his wife Mary Ann died in 1879, they are both buried at Ide and their daughter Charlotte is also remembered on their gravestone. (see gravestone Inscriptions Ide)
