JOHN WILCOX SCANES

JOHN WILCOX SCANES 1836 -

John Wilcox was the second son and of Samuel Tuck Scanes and Mary Ann Wilcocks. He was baptised 27th March  1836 at Ide.  His father was a Carpenter employing 2 men, a trade that John would follow. During the period of the 1841 census John was visiting his grand parents John & Sarah Willcox at Kenton they were the Inn keepers at the Castle Inn in South Town. John was well educated as the 1851 census shows, he was still at school age 15, his two youngest sisters were educated at home. The 1861 census shows John age 24 a carpenter living with and in the employ of his uncle William Henry Willcox (his mother's brother) and aunt Jane (his father's sister), at 20 Bilton Street in west Teignmouth. His uncle had a building business employing 10 men and 4 boys.

John Willcox married Emily Radford. Their daughter Eda Isabel was baptised at Ide 2nd December 1866.

The 1881 census shows his family living at 56 Spiller Street, Exeter ,:- John W Scanes age 44, a Joiner, born at Ide, his wife Emily age 36, born at Exeter, daughter Eda age 14, a scholar and Mother-in-law Elizabeth Radford, widow age 77, born at Tedburn St Mary.
