LEWINGTON FAMILY TREE

My thanks to Denis & Joan Hamilton for adding to my information and giving me information on their line.

WILLIAM LEWINGTON 1780 - 1845

William was born about 1780, He married Sarah Durbage at Kingsclere on 31st October 1814, witnessed by William Durbage & Maria Durbage. Their first child Eliza was baptised at Kingsclere on 28th April 1816. The family then moved to West Woodhay where Maria was baptised 12th April 1818. The family moved back to Kingsclere where their other 4 children were baptised. Thomas baptised 26th October 1823, Thomas died aged 22, and was buried 23rd January 1846. Esther was born 25th June 1826 at Humswell and baptised 18th July 1826, she married George Drewett. Charles was baptised 9th November 1828 and Joseph baptised 6th March 1831. The 1841 census shows the family living at Newbury Street, Kingsclere, William age 50 an Agricultural Labourer, Sarah his wife age 45, Maria age 20, Esther age 14, Charles age 12, and Joseph age 10.

The family moved to Falcon Street during 1841, Maria had a child and got married in November 1841. William died age 65 of a Fever on 19th March 1845, he was buried at Kingsclere on 20th March 1845. The following year his son Thomas died age 22 at the Union Workhouse. The 1851 census shows Sarah his widow living at the Union Poor House, working as a farm labourer. She died there aged 63 in 1854.

MARIA LEWINGTON 1818 -

Maria was the 2nd child of William Lewington and Sarah Durbage, she was born and baptised at West Woodhay in Berkshire on 12th April 1818, although she always thought she was born in East Woodhay, Hampshire. The family moved back to Kingsclere and were living at Newbury Street, at the time of the 1841 census. Maria had a baby Harriet baptised 4th April 1841, later that year she married William Piper at Kingsclere on 1st November 1841, witnessed by John Piper & Joseph Seward. They settled in Kingsclere Dell, where they had another 6 children. James born 1843, Charlotte born 1846, Jane born 1849. While Maria was pregnant with her next child at the time of the 1851 census, the family were in financial trouble, so Maria and her children went to live at the Union Workhouse. John was baptised in July 1851 and Maria moved back home with her family. Ann Maria was born 1853. Tragedy struck in 1856 when her son James died age 13. Maria became pregnant again and named her next son James baptised 26th August 1857, but sadly he died age 2 weeks. Maria had more hardship to come, her husband William was killed in an accident at work, on 7th January 1859, when he was suffocated when a pit fell in on him. The 1861 census shows Maria age 43 working as an Agricultural Labourer still living at Kingsclere Dell, only Jane age 12 and Ann Maria age 7 still living with her.

Maria married George Foster also a widower, son of John Foster at Kingsclere on 7th March 1863, the witnesses were James Miles and Keziah Bridgeman. (information from Barbara Mallyon)
