MICHAEL CHEDZOY

MICHAEL CHEDZOY 1824 -  (information from John Lecky relative from Australia)

Michael was the 4th child of James Chedzoy and Sarah Willmont. He was baptised 25th December 1824 at Stoke St Gregory church. When he was 26 years he married Elizabeth Coate daughter of John Coate on 8th June 1840, his occupation was labourer, but he later became a Mason like his father James. They both signed their names, witnessed by Emanuel Chedzoy, Henry Coate, Rebecca Giate, Eliz Chedgzoy X her mark, Emily Tapp.

Michael and Elizabeth had 4 children. Henry Samuel baptised 23rd June 1850, he died age 9 and was buried 27th January 1860.

The 1851 census shows Michael and his family living at Stoke St Gregory. Michael Chedzoy, head, aged 26, Farmer of 7 acres, no labs. Elizabeth Chedzoy, wife, aged 24. Henry E Chedzoy, son, aged 10 months.

George Charles their 2nd son was baptised 18th April 1852. Walter Robert their 3rd son was baptised 20th December1857. Their 4th son they named Henry Samuel he was baptised 19th October 1862. He married Mary Ann Franklin, and died 1927. All were baptised at Stoke St Gregory church.

The 1881 census shows Michael and his family living at Hancocks, Stoke St Gregory. Michael age 56, a Farmer of 20 acres, his wife Elizabeth age 54, son Robert age 23 a Farmers son, son Henry age 18 also a farmers son.

The 1901 census shows Michael a widower, living alone, at a Cottage in Dark Lane, aged 76, and a Clerk for the Parish Church.

Michael must have prospered because he leased Slough Court Farm, a large property dating back to the 11th century, and it is shown clearly on Ordnance Survey Map (193).

GEORGE CHARLES CHEDZOY 1852 - 1931

George Charles 2nd son of Michael Chedzoy and Elizabeth Coate was baptised 18th April 1852 at Stoke St Gregory church. He married Elizabeth Ann Sophia Pope on 11th January 1878. They had 7 children, Howard John Pipe born 1879 and Herbert George born 1881. The 1881 census shows they were living at Dark Lane, Stoke St Gregory, George Charles age 29 was a Yeoman farming 23 acres, Elizabeth his wife aged 26, son Howard age 2 and son Herbert age 2 months. The two boys were baptised together on 31st January 1882 at Stoke St Gregory church. Howard married Florence Adams. (The other children I believe must have been baptised elsewhere) Henry Samuel born 1884, Harold. Hugh born 1887, Ethel born 1890. Kate born 1891.

The 1891 census shows the family as George Chedzoy, head, aged 39, Farmer. Elizabeth, wife, aged 36. Howard, son, aged 12, scholar. Herbert, son, aged 10, scholar. Henry, son, aged 6, scholar. Hugh, son, aged 3. Ethel, daughter, aged 1.

The 1901 census shows the family living at Langford Farm, Fivehead. George Chedzoy, head, aged 49, Farmer. Ann, wife, aged 46. Howard, son, aged 22, Farm Bailiff. Hubert, son, aged 20. Henry, son, aged 16. Hugh, son, aged 13. Ethel, daughter, aged 11. Kate, daughter, aged 8. All were born at Stoke St Gregory.

George Charles also lived at Slough Court Farm and leased it.

George Charles died aged 79, 15th May 1931 he is buried at the Baptist Chapel, Meare Green, his wife Elizabeth Ann Sophie died 1st April 1939 aged 84, she is buried with him.

WALTER ROBERT CHEDZOY 1857 1949

Walter Robert was the 3rd child of Michael Chedzoy and Elizabeth Coate, he was baptised 20th December 1857 at Stoke St Gregory church. Walter Robert married Martha House born in 1852, at Stoke St Gregory church on 4th April 1882. They had 3 children. Clifford William was baptised 29th July 1884. Dora Elizabeth was baptised 11th May 1885. Dora married William Broom. Bertha Sarah baptised 31st July 1898. Bertha married Sidney Wyatt. 

The 1891 census shows the family as Walter Chedzoy, head, aged 36, Farmer. Martha, wife, aged 39. Clifford, son, aged 6, scholar. Dora, daughter, aged 4. Bertha, daughter, aged 3.

The 1901 census shows the family living at Lovell's Farm. Robert Chedzoy, head, age 43, Farmer. Martha, wife, age 49. Clifford, son, age 16, Farmer's son. Dora, daughter, age 14. Bertha, daughter, age 13.

Martha died 25th February 1927 and Walter died in 1949.

HENRY SAMUEL CHEDZOY 1862 - 1927

Henry Samuel Chedzoy was the 4th child of Michael Chedzoy he was baptised 19th October 1862 at Stoke St Gregory church. Henry married Mary Anne Franklin. They had 3 daughters Jessie who married Mr. Male, they had a son Norman who produced Teasles on his farm "Tanyard". Elsie who married Thomas Luxton of Blockhouse Farm, Fivehead. Ada was born 1899 and died 1984.

CLIFFORD WILLIAM 1884 - 1978

Clifford William first child and only son of Walter Robert Chedzoy and Elizabeth Coate, he was baptised at Stoke St Gregory church 29th July 1884. He married Ida Wyatt in 1919. They had 5 children. Bertha May baptised 14th September 1919, she married Fred Dane. Donald Clifford baptised 4th October 1921, he married Joan Harrison, Donald lived at Lonsdale, Stoke St Gregory and was a Willow Merchant, Joan his wife did a lot of family research. They had a son David Robert who married Lynda Miller, and they have two children Robert James and Edward Timothy. Dorothy Ella baptised 6th September 1925, she married Don Boon in 1946. Merlin George baptised 23rd June 1929. Kathleen born 1929, she married John Legg in 1950. Ida died 25th September 1966 age 77 and Clifford William died 27th March 1978 age 93.
