STOKE ST GREGORY PARISH REGISTERS
transcription by Sue Froud
This page contains miscellaneous entries I have found in the parish registers. I have tried to keep the spelling as true to the original as I can. My thanks to Brian Christensen who kindly sent me his transcription of some these entries, which has enabled me to fill in a few gaps.
The Following is written on the first page of the first Register (D/P/sto.st.g 2/1/1
Baptisms, Marriages Burials 1561 - 1744
A Register of weddings, christenings and burialls within the Parish of Gregory Stoke, from the yere of our lord, 1561 till this present yere 1600: diligentlie perused and faithfully copied out of the old booke (according to the order in that behalfe provided by mee Thomas Cutler, curate of the said Parish.
Now, whereas by the said order it was appointed that this book should be copied out, from the first yere of the raigne of our soveraigne lady Queen Elizabeth, since? which yere the book was, by thieves, amongst other things stollen out of the church and therefore not ........? yeres: and then is in 1561 till the year 1575 so indiscreetly handled that when the book was shewed before the Queens visitores, the parishoners, I have herd by credible report were grevously amerced: Therefore I hope every indifferent man will charitably judge of my dealing, in copying out of this book, for I have doon it as I could and not as I would, yet somewhat better then I found it, I present it to your view
yours in the lord Thomas Cutler

2nd page of first Register.
The yere of our lord
Wheras the yere of our Lord according to the accounts of the church of England, beginneth on the 25th of March, yes in this book I have followed the comon account, beginning the yere on newyeres day before, litle differing from the feast of the natitivity of Christ, wher som entries begin the yere of our Lord: which I have doon for 2 causes, first for that the unlearned or less acquainted to the unlar account, secondly bicause the same account is used throughout ye old book.
Furthermore, the order, which I have observed is both breef and easy. Breef in that .....? of many superfluous words necessarily to be under lined. Easy, in that the name of the person registered is ever set in the beginning of the line for specifying in search, and all done in the english tung for everyman to reade, being desirous rather to benefit other, then at the hands of the unlearned to hunt for comendation of learning, being altogither unworthy therof. yours Tho. Cutler.
