OTHER AUSTRALIAN SCANES FAMILIES

Most of the Scanes in Australia are descended from 2 Scanes families who arrived in Australia in the 1850's. One family sailed on the "Constitution", their story is told by Malcolm Scanes. The other family sailed on the "Speedy" and settled in the Yass area of NSW. 

WILLIAM SCANES 1803 - (see Other Scanes Families - St Thomas, Exeter)

William married Ann Elizabeth Trefowne (Trithowne) on 22nd January 1821 at Topsham in Devon. The 1851 census taken for St Sidwell, Exeter. Shows the couple with children Jessy aged 14, Frank aged 13 and Hannah aged 10. Four years later the family emigrated to Australia on the "Speedy" and settled in the Yass area of NSW.

JESSIE SCANES 1837 -  1919 (Ancestor of Bob Walsh, who has given me the following information)

Jessie married William Smith on 3rd April 1860 at St Clement's Anglican Church at Yass, New South Wales. Jessie had 12 children listed below. 

William Frederick Smith 1860 -1922, married Harriet Garland at Yass in 1892.

Letitia "Ellen" Smith 1861 - 1921, married John Fletcher Turton at Yass in 1882.

Rebecca Eliza Smith 1863 -1951 married Thomas Walsh at Bowning in 1891.

Emma J Smith 1864 - 1919.

Alexander Thomas Smith 1866 - 1949 married Mary Tannor at Murrumburrah in 1895.

James Smith 1867 - 1944.

Annie E Smith 1869 - 1870.

Elizabeth Jessie Smith 1870 - 1919 married Edward Collett at Yass in 1895.

Monteith Charles Smith 1872 - 1953 married Ethel J Flower at Yass in 1899.

Harry Smith 1873 - 1949.

Robert John Smith 1876 - 1950 married Mary McNally at Yass in 1901.

Frederick Arthur Smith 1880 - 1938 married Olive "Lena" Davies at Jeir in 1905.

William Smith died on 17th August1912 at the family property, Devonshire Farm, Bowning, near Yass. Jessie died on 25th July 1919 also at Devonshire Farm.
