GEORGE PIPER

George married Christian Webb at Kingsclere on 6th August 1803.

WILLIAM PIPER 1816 - 1859

William was born in 1816, son of George Piper and probably Christian Webb. There is no baptism in the Kingsclere parish registers for him. William Piper married Maria Lewington daughter of William Lewington at Kingsclere on 1st November 1841, he was living at Kingsclere Dell at the time, Maria was living at Falcon Street, Kingsclere, neither could sign their names. William worked as a Labourer and they struggled throughout their married life together. Maria already had a child Harriet born 1841 who appears on the census. William and Maria lived at Kingsclere Dell and had another 6 children. James was baptised 5th February 1843, but he died aged 13 in May 1856, Charlotte was baptised 12th July 1846, and Jane was baptised 17th June 1849.

In 1851 at the time of the census William was a prisoner in Winchester Prison, aged 35. Meanwhile his wife Maria age 33 is a Pauper living at the Union Workhouse in Kingsclere, with her children Harriet age 11, James age 8, Charlotte age 6 and Jane age 2. Maria was pregnant again with her next child John who was baptised 27th July 1851, the records show they were living at Kingsclere Dell again. Ann Maria was baptised 25th September 1853. Their eldest son James died in May 1856, so they named their last child James who was baptised 26th August 1857.

William was working as an Agricultural Labourer at Wolverton, were he was working in a pit, which collasped and he died from suffocation, he was only 42. The accident happened on 7th January 1859, he was buried at Kingsclere on 10th January 1859. (see Maria Lewington)

JANE PIPER 1849 -

Jane was the 4th child of William Piper and Maria Lewington, she was born at 5pm on the 8th March 1949, and baptised on 17th June 1849 at Kingsclere. When Jane was 2 years old, her mother took her and her siblings to the Union Workhouse at Kingsclere, her father was in Winchester Prison at the time.  Jane's mother was pregnant and gave birth to John in the workhouse I think. The family moved back to Kingsclere Dell shortly afterwards. Jane's brother James died in 1856 and the next baby was named after him. Then in 1859 her father died in an accident. The family continued to live at The Dell, Kingsclere, and in 1861 only Jane and Anna Maria were living at home with their mother.

Jane married Daniel Stallard a Labourer from Kingsclere on 17th February 1866, her older sister Charlotte was a witness. Daniel and Jane moved to Isleworth where their son Charles William was born in 1867. A few years later they went to China and took their son with them. Daniel and Jane sadly died on the return, and Charles William went to live with Jane's younger sister Annie Maria who married Nicholas Smeeth.
