In the summer of 1850 just after the birth of her 2nd child their daughter Mary died, Thomas and Harriet took the eldest grandson Frederick James to look after, and their son James took the baby William Charles to look after. Harriet's husband died age 67 in 1855 and was buried at Frensham on 18th May 1855. Harriet was left to care for young Frederick James who and the 1861 census shows that Harriet had became a School Mistress, her son Arthur age 21 was at home and working as an Agricultural Labourer, and her grandson now known as James was at school. The 1881 census shows Harriet age 80 as a patient at Brookwood Lunatic Asylum, she died there on 13th December 1884 aged 84 of congestion of the lungs and was buried at Frensham on 19th December 1884.
