RICHARD PESTER

Information from Barbara Ryan, Percy Pester, Dorothy Morris and census returns.  

RICHARD PESTER 1818 -

Richard was the 5th child of George Pester and Ann Splatt, he was born on 17th January and baptised two weeks later on 1st February 1818 at Whitestone. Richard was a Carpenter by trade, a trade which his sons would follow when they grew up. Richard married Ann Lake from Dunsford, and they had 3 children. Sabrina born about 1840, Jemima/Louisa born about 1845 and Henry Richard born about1848.  According to the LDS 1851 census, they were living at Albert Place in Exeter St Mary Major, Richard Pester aged 33. Wife Ann aged 35. and children Sabrina aged 10, Jemima aged 5 and Henry Richard aged 2.  The following year in 1852 George was born. Ann must have died sometime after Georges' birth. 

Richard then married Ann Connett from Shute, she was 3 years younger than his first wife Ann. They had 7 children, John Connett born in 1859, Martha/Mary Ann born in 1860. The 1861 FreeCEN census shows the family living at Oakhampton Street, St Thomas'. Richard Pester aged 43 master Carpenter employing 1 man and a boy, born at Whitestone. Wife Ann, aged 40, born at Shute. Daughter Lousia (was Jemima on 1851 census) aged 16, born at St Thomas', Son Henry aged 13, scholar, born at Exeter. Son George, aged 8, scholar, born at Exeter. Son John C, aged 3, scholar born at Exeter, Daughter Mary Ann, aged 6 months, born at St Thomas'. Sabrina aged 21 has left home and is working as a general Servant in the Wake household at Haccombe, St Thomas'.  Dinah E. was born in 1862. 

Richard and Ann then moved to Willesdon, Middlesex where Simon T. was born in 1865, Emmanuel was born in 1867, Arthur was born 1869 and Francis was born in 1871. The family can be found on the 1881 census living at 5 Victoria Place, Willesden, Middlesex : Richard now aged 63, working as a Carpenter Joiner. wife Ann aged 53 a dressmaker. Dinah E. is aged 18, Simon T. aged 15 and working as a plumber, he was born at Hampstead, Middlesex. Emmanuel aged 13 is an errand boy, born at Willesden. Arthur aged 11 is a scholar. Francis aged 9 also a scholar, both born in Willesden. Brother Simon has also moved to Willesden and is living at 1a Victoria Place.

Daughter Jemima now aged 35 is working as a Domestic Cook for Mary McBean, Head of School at 26 Priory Road, Hampstead, Middlesex. There were 8 boarding scholars as well as an English Governess and a French Governess who was a Professor boarding.

Daughter Martha now aged 20 was working as a Domestic Servant in the Butt household at Cavendish Road, Park House, Willesden, Middlesex. Charles B Butt was a Woollen Cloth Merchant.

The following information is was supplied to me by Dorothy Morris, from research by Percy Pester. I have also added extra information from census returns.

HENRY RICHARD PESTER 1849 -

Henry Richard was the 3rd child of Richard Pester and Ann Lake, he was born in Exeter about 1849 (according to the 1851 census).  Henry Richard married Honor (?) a girl from East Dereham, Norfolk. Whether Henry met Honor in Middlesex or he went to East Dereham I do not know, but the couple settled at East Dereham for about 7 years before moving down to Hampstead. Henry and Honor had at least 4 children. Sabrina born about 1874, Louisa born about 1875, Henry born about 1878 who were all born at East Dereham. Then John G. born in 1880 at Hampstead.  The LDS 1881 census shows the family living at 4A Upper Pk Terrace, Hampstead, Middlesex. Henry Pester aged 31, Carpenter, born at Exeter. his wife Honor aged 29 born at East Dereham. daughter Sabrina aged 7, scholar. daughter Louisa aged 6, scholar. son Henry aged 3. son John G. aged 8 months. 

GEORGE PESTER 1852 -

George was the youngest child of Richard Pester and his first wife Ann, he was born in 1852. He married Frances (?) and they had 4 children. Percival born 1872, Ada born in 1873, George born in 1875 and Richard born in 1878. The LDS 1881 census shows the family living at 11 Canterbury Terrace, Willesden, Middlesex. George Pester aged 28, Carpenter, born at Exeter. Wife Francis aged 32, born at Plaistow, Essex. son Percival aged 8, born at Chelsea. daughter Ada aged 7, born at Willesden. son George aged 5 born at Willesden. son Richard aged 2, born at Willesden. Niece Louisa Robinson aged 7, born at Willesden.

JOHN CONNETT PESTER 1859 -

John C. was the first child of Richard Pester and his second wife Ann Connett, he was born in 1859. John married Emily Chittick. The LDS 1881 census shows them living at 4 Upper Park Terrace, Hampstead, next door to brother Henry Richard. John is aged 22, working as a Carpenter and wife Emily is aged 21. They had one daughter Emily Lydia born in 1881. John later married Lilly Knights. Lydia married Arthur Henry Willet and they had a daughter named Lily. 

EMMANUEL PESTER 1867 -

Emmanuel was the 5th child of Richard Pester and his second wife Ann Connett, he was born in 1867. Emmanuel married Jane Kennedy and they had two sons Albert Emanuel, who married but had no children and Ernest John who married and had a daughter Barbara.
