SAMUEL CRUSE
SAMUEL CRUSE 1814 -
Samuel was the 4th child of Samuel Cruse and Mary Baker, he was born at Kenton 14th August 1814 and was baptised 28th August 1814. Samuel married Maria who was 4 years older than himself.
The 1851 census shows that they settled at Bartholomew Street, Exeter, Samuel age 36, a Tailor Journeyman, his wife Maria age 40, born at Moorwinstow, (Morwenstow, Cornwall) daughter Emily R. age 7, a scholar, daughter Catherine F. age 5, a scholar, daughter Rebekah age 3, son Benjamin age 7 months, all born at Exeter.
Whilst trying to find Samuel's son Benjamin on the 1881 census, I found the whole family had moved to Aston, Birmingham. Maria must have died. Samuel then married Sophia, and had a son John born about 1865. Two years later moving the family to Birmingham, where Henry was born, about 1867. The 1881 census records the family living at 7 Victoria Terrace, Moseley Road, Aston, Warwickshire. Samuel aged 66, occupation, Tailor. His wife Sophia, aged 55, Tailoress. Son John, aged 16, Brass Founder. Son Henry, aged 14, Coffin Furniture Stamper. Son Benjamin, aged 30, Chandelier Maker, Daughter-in-law Jane aged 27, born in Birmingham. Grandson Benjamin, aged 5, scholar. Grandson Samuel A., aged 11 months.
CATHERINE FANNY CRUSE 1846 - Catherine was the 2nd child of Samuel Cruse and Maria, she was born about 1846. She married George Tayler a bootmaker on 14th July 1872 at St Mary Major, Exeter. (information from Des Gander, Guild of One-Name Studies') I found them on the 1881 census living at 1 Clarence Road,( in the Bristol St Philip & Jacob Out, district, in Gloucester). George aged 41 and Kate aged 36. No children.
BENJAMIN ADAM CRUSE 1850 - (infomation from 1891 & 1901 census' and marriage certificates sent to me by Debbie Kennett) Benjamin was born about 1850 in Exeter, son of Samuel Cruse and Maria. Benjamin moved to Birmingham with the family in the mid 1870's, where his met and married Jane Homans about 1875. By 1881 they have two children Benjamin J. born about 1876 and Samuel A.born about 1880. They are living with Benjamin's father Samuel at 7 Victoria Terrace, Moseley Road, Aston. Benjamin is working as a Chandelier Maker.
By the 1891 census, Benjamin and Jane have moved to 58 Pollock Road, Newington, London, with children Benjamin J,. Arthur S,. Ida F., and Marie. Benjamin's occupation is stated as Commercial Traveller. His wife Jane and children were all born in Birmingham. (Note: Samuel A. is now known as Arthur S.)
By 1901, Benjamin had died, leaving Jane as head of the family. They have moved to 2, Helix Road, Lambeth. Arthur, aged 20 is working as an Ironmonger, Ida and Marie are not working.
BENJAMIN JAMES CRUSE 1876 - (infomation from 1891 & 1901 census' and marriage certificates sent to me by Debbie Kennett) Benjamin eldest son of Benjamin Adam Cruse and Jane Holmans was born in Birmingham. By 1891, he had started working as a Print Compositor. Benjamin married Julia Ann
Golding, aged 24, daughter of John Frederick Golding, a Farrier from Westminster, on 24th January 1900.
ARTHUR SAMUEL CRUSE 1880 - (infomation from 1891 & 1901 census' and marriage certificates sent to me by Debbie Kennett) Arthur was the 2nd child of Benjamin Adam Cruse and Jane Holmans, he was born in Birmingham. After his father died, it looks as if he was the only bread winner in the house, working as an Ironmonger. By the time he was 30 years old, Arthur had changed occupation to be an Insurance Agent. He married Florence Ada Hillman, daughter of Walter Hillman a Watchmaker on 8th September 1910, at St Michaels, Stockwell.
