SLATTER FAMILY TREE
WILLIAM SLATTER 1795 - 1843
William was born about 1795, and lived in Radley. He was 29 years old when he married Lydia Woodley at Long Wittenham on 10th October 1825, the witnesses included William Woodley and Maria Taylor. William was the only one able to sign his name. After their marriage, they moved back to Radley and raised their 8 children. Josiah was baptised 17th December 1826, Joseph was baptised 19th April 1829, Samuel was baptised 5th February 1832, Eliza was baptised 10th November 1834, Maria was baptised 18th March 1837, James was baptised 28th April 1839.
The 1841 census shows the family living in Radley, William is an Agricultural Labourer. Later that year Louisa was born and was baptised 8th August 1841. 2 years later William died age 47 from Inflamation of the Bowels, at 10.30pm on 10th October 1843, Hannah Sherman was present when he died at East Saint Helen Street, Abingdon, she also registered his death. He was buried 14th October 1843 at Radley church. He left his wife Lydia pregnant. (see Lydia Woodley)
SAMUEL SLATTER 1832 -
Samuel was the 3rd child of William Slatter and Lydia Woodley, he was baptised at Radley on 5th February 1832. His father William died when Samuel was only 11 years old. His mother was pregnant at the time, and his baby sister Lydia was born the following March 1844, but she died within a week, then his young brother James aged 5 drowned in the park, a few days later. The family moved to the town of Abingdon by 1851 where his elder brothers had gone to. His mother found work in a House, and Samuel and his 3 sisters lived together in Spring Road, Samuel was 19, Eliza was 16, Maria was 14 and Louisa the youngest was 9 and still at school, Samuel was working as a Malster, and his 2 sisters were Laundress's.
Three years later Samuel married Amy Huggins daughter of William Huggins, at Appleford church on 26th April 1854. They were both living in Appleford at the time. But after they married they went back to Abingdon, where Samuel used his skills as a Brewer, at the Holly Bush in Ock Street, Abingdon. By 1861 they had 2 children, William born 4th August 1855 and Elizabeth born 1857. More children followed, James born 1861, Kate born 1864, Fred born 1866 and Heber born 1870. by 1871, William called himself a Publican, his son William was working and the other children were at school. Jesse was born 1873.
The 1881 census shows that Samuel age 49 and his family are still at the Holly Bush in Ock Street, Amy his wife age 42, William has gone to Reading and married, James age 19 is a trained Butcher, Kate age 17 is a Dressmaker, Heber age 12 and Jesse age 8 are at School. They also have a 15 year old servant girl Sarah Huggins, whom I think must be a relative of Amy's.
I found Samuel on the 1891 census, now age 59 and a widower, living on his own means. He has moved from the Pub and is living at 3 Exbourne Place with daughter Kate age 24 and still Dressmaking and son Jesse age 18 working as a Clothiers fitters. 10 years later in 1901, Samuel is still living at no. 3 Exbourne Place, aged 69, retired Publican, born at Radley, with daughter Kate, aged 37, single, Dressmaker working from home, born at Abingdon.
WILLIAM SLATTER 1855 -
William was born Friday 6th August 1855 at Ock Street, St Helen, Abingdon. He was the eldest child of Samuel Slatter and Amy Huggins. At age 15 William shown on the 1871 census was working as a Labourer, he moved to Reading and was working at the Biscuit Factory and living at 11 Bembridge Place, when he married Lucy Froud daughter of Thomas Froud, at the Baptist Meeting House, Kings Road, Reading on 8th June 1878.
They moved to 70 Carnarvon Road, as shown on the 1881 census, they had 2 lodgers who also worked at the Biscuit Factory. The same year their first child Lilian Kate was born and baptised 5th June 1881, followed 2 years later with William born 1883 baptised 7th October 1883, by which time they had moved to Crescent Cottages, in Earley. 7 years later the 1891 census show's William and Lucy living at 23 Awbery Terrace, Reading, along with Lilian Kate now aged 9, William age 7, Heber Percy age 4, Albert age 2, who were born in Earley. Also living at the same address was Heber Slatter born in Abingdon and his wife Minnie born in Hazely Heath. Minnie was Lucy's sister, and Heber was William's brother. Ethel Maud was born on Christmas Day 1896 and the family were living at 25 Orts Road, Reading, where they lived for a few years before moving to 27 Orts Road.
The 1901 census show William Slatter aged 44, Biscuit Factory Labourer, born Abingdon. Lucy his wife, aged 43, Midwife, born Bramshill. Lilian K daughter, aged 19, born Reading. William, son, aged 17, Carpenter, born Reading. Albert E. son, aged 12, born Reading. Ethel M. daughter, aged 4, born Reading. Minnie J. sister in law, aged 32, Dressmaker, born Hazely Heath. Winifred G. niece, aged 5, born Reading. Cyril, nephew, aged 2, born Reading. Mary Neate, Lodger, widow, aged 80, born Scotland.
3 years later they moved again, to 107 Queens Road, Lilian Kate and her husband George Hoad were living with the family in 1918. William has now become a Baker at the Biscuit Factory. Lucy's father Thomas Froud was living with them when he died in 1919.
ETHEL MAUD SLATTER 1896 - 1946
Ethel Maud was born on Christmas Day Friday 25th December 1896, at Orts Road, Reading. She was youngest child of William Slatter and Lucy Froud. The family moved to 27 Orts Road in 1902 and 3 years later in 1905 they moved again to 107 Queens Road.
When Ethel was 22 she married her cousin Thomas Froud son of Thomas Froud, at the church of St John the Evangelist in Reading on 20th September 1919. Both her father William and Sister Lilian Kate Hoad were witnesses, along with Phyllis Hancock. Thomas Froud was an Engineer and they went to live at 28 Goodden Road, near the R.A.E. in Farnborough where he worked. 2 years later their first child Margaret Phyllis was born in 1921. 4 Years later they had another child Kenneth Thomas born in 1925. The family moved to Chelsea Cottages, Fellows Road, and from there they moved to a new house Thomas had built in Marrowbrook Lane, they called the house 'Erleigh'.
Ethel died age 49 on 4th March 1946 at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. She was buried 8th March 1946 at St John's Church in Cove, Farnborough.
