THOMAS GEORGE SMELLIE 1786 - 1858

Thomas George was born in 1786 at Edinburgh, a son of Thomas Smellie and Mary. He made a living as Copperplate printer in Edinburgh, where he married Barbara on 19th April 1810. They had 10 children. Thomas born 18th May 1811, Daniel born 10th May 1813, Mary Anne born 25th April 1815, Ann born 23rd August 1817, but she sadly died 8th September 1822. Margaret was born in 1822, then Elizabeth on 17th May 1824 and Anne Anderson born 24th October 1826. The family then moved to Covent Garden in London where, John was born 4th August 1828, then Barbara was born 12th April 1831 and finally Alexander was born 12th August 1833.

All the boys followed the printing trade either as Copperplate printers or Engravers.

JOHN SMELLIE 1828 - 1909

John married Mary Chedzoy from Stoke St Gregory on 13th October 1862 at St Andrews Church, Islington. Mary and John lived at 26 Falkland Avenue, Kentish Town. John was a Copperplate engraver. They had 4 children Robert James who was born 15th July 1863,  Alfred John who was born in 1865,  Eliza Elizabeth who was born 31st July 1866. George Harry who was born 1st February 1868.

I found the family on the 1881 census living at 26 Falkland Road, St Pancras, London. John Smellie, head, aged 52, Engraver, born Middlesex. Mary Smellie, wife, aged 50, born Middlesex (this should be Stoke St Gregory). Robert Smellie, son, aged 17, Architect (pupil), born Middlesex. George H. Smellie, son, aged 13, Scholar, born St Pancras. Sarah A. Daw, visitor, aged 30, Milliner, born Somerset.

Their daughter Elizabeth was visiting George Spicer and his family in Kensington, presumably because the Milliner had taken her room.
