THE KENTON SPLATTS

I am not sure where the Splatt's found in Kenton came from before they settled in Kenton, but they must connect to Splatt's from other villages. On this page I have put together all the information I have gathered on these families, using Parish registers, the IGI, gravestone inscriptions and census returns. My thanks to all who have contributed to the information on this page.

JOHN SPLATT - 1799?

John Splatt married Mary Potter 29th May 1750, I have no information on when or where he was born. I found 2 children Mary baptised 21st November 1753 and William baptised 27th February 1756. There is a burial in the registers for Mary on 2nd May 1758. John may have been buried 14th March 1799 or it could apply to the other John senior.

WILLIAM SPLATT 1756 - 1839 (my thanks to Judy O'Neill for the extra info)

William was the son of John Splatt and Mary Potter, he was baptised 27th February 1756. William married Ann Merryful on 28th October 1779. They had 6 children. John baptised 20th September 1780. JOHN SPLATT 1780 - 1859

John I believe was the first child of William Splatt and Ann Merryful, he was baptised at Kenton 20th September 1780. He married Fanny Stokes at Kenton on 28th February 1804. They had a daughter Fanny born about 1806/7. John's wife Fanny died aged 27, her body was brought from Powderham to be buried at Kenton on 12th March 1807.

John married Elizabeth Laskey, probably at Chudleigh about 1810. They had nine children, Their first was William Francis born at Chudleigh about 1811, Mary Ann was born about 1813, Thomas was born about 1815, Francis was born about 1816. The family moved to Kenton, where John was a Yeoman at Willsworthy. Edmond Laskey was born 6th May 1817 and baptised at Kenton 30th May. Elizabeth was born 16th May 1819 and baptised 7th June. Caroline was born 20th March 1821 and baptised 26th April. Susanna was born 9th July 1822 and baptised 22nd August. Anna Maria was born about 1828.

John died aged 80 in 1859, he outlived his wife Elizabeth and four of their daughters, his gravestone in Kenton churchyard gives quite an account of what happened. John Splatt - Yeoman - son of William and Ann Splatt - of this parish - who died in 1859 - aged 80 years - also to the memory of Elizabeth his wife - aged 66 years - and their four daughters - Mary Ann aged 37 years - Elizabeth aged 31 years - Susan aged 27 years - and Anna aged 22 years - all of whom were suddenly cut off - by the ship wreck of the Orion steamer - in June 1850 - also to the memory of - Frank Splatt 3rd son of the above - John & Elizabeth Splatt - who died in Canada 1859 - aged 45 years.

This tragedy is also recorded on a mural tablet in the south aisle of Chudleigh Church. "Erected by William Francis Splatt, to the memory of this mother Elizabeth Splatt, who was born A.D. 1784, and died A.D. 1850, aged 66. For many years she resided at Northwood in this parish. Blessed with a gentle disposition, she was deservedly beloved by all who knew her, and most tenderly endeared to her ten children, six of whom survive to lament their irreparable loss: the other four, namely Mary Ann, aged 37 years. Elizabeth, aged 31 years. Susan, aged 27 years, and Anna Maria, aged 22 years, in the prime of life, perished with their mother, by the awful shipwreck of the "Orion" steamship on a voyage from Liverpool to Glasgow 18th June 1850." this extract was taken from "A History of Chudleigh" chapter 5. http://www.uk.genealogy.org.uk/
