THOMAS CHEDZOY (2)
information about Thomas Chedzoy was sent to me by Maureen Martin from Tasmania. Maureen very kindly photographed the documents for me.
THOMAS CHEDZOY 1817 -
Thomas was the second child of John Chedzoy and Ann Gait, he was baptised 25th December 1817 at Stoke St Gregory. Thomas had 5 brothers and 4 sisters, although at present I haven't managed to find out all their names. (see John and Ann Page)
Thomas it seems didn't follow his father's trade and become a Mason, but got into bad company and got caught for Burglary and transported to Tasmania. When he got there, detailed notes were taken about him and it is from these notes sent to me that I can tell you what happened to Thomas Chedzoy.

Thomas was tried at the Somerset Quarter Sessions on 6th July 1840 with Joseph Boy, for Burglary and Housebreaking, they stole spoons, meat and a coat. Thomas was sentenced for 10 years to Van Diemen's Land, which is now Tasmania. He embarked on the ship 25th May 1841 and arrived 4th October 1841, he was 24 years old. He was 5'4" tall and had a fair complexion, his hair was brown with no whiskers. his head is described as long as was his visage (face) with a high forehead, his eyes were blue with brown eyebrows, his nose is also described as long, his chin was broad pimpled.
There are many remarks written down on Thomas's convict sheet over the years, his behavior always is described as good, or mild & good, general conduct orderly. Things can not have been that bad as on 6th March 1846 Thomas now aged 28 a Farm Servant married Jane Brown aged 22 spinster at All Saints Church of England church, Swansea, Tasmania. They both made their marks. (Reference: NS 1544/2 No. 70 (AOT) On the 20th October 1846 he had a ticket of Leave. Another comment is C.P. App'd 9th January 1849.
Thomas was finally released on 13th January 1852, when he went to Melbourne, Victoria. I would love to hear from anyone who may be descended from Thomas.
