THOMAS ALDRED

THOMAS ALDRED 1831 -

Thomas was the 6th child of Thomas Aldred and Harriet Remnant, he was baptised at Frensham on 5th March 1831. Thomas married Mary Moss daughter of Henry Moss in December 1849, Thomas was underage and his bother James and his wife Ann were witnesses. Looking on the IGI I have found two possible children, Eliza baptised 11th September 1853 and Jane baptised 24th August 1856. Mary died, and looking through the Parish registers I have two entries, but I'm not sure which one applies to Mary, either Mary Aldred age 47, buried 19th November 1856, from Frensham, or Mary Aldred age 39, buried 19th July 1859, from Batts Corner. The 1861 census for Dockenfield shows Thomas age 30 a widower and agricultural labourer, with a son James born in Dockenfield age 11 a scholar. Jane was not mentioned on this census but she reappears on the 1871 census.

Thomas married again to Caroline Newell on 29th November 1862, at Frensham. They had at least two children Thomas born about 1864 and George Frederick baptised 24th June 1866 at Frensham. The 1871 census shows Thomas age 40 a Licenced Victualler at the Blue Bell PH at Batts Corner, with wife Caroline age 43, daughter Jane age 14 a scholar, son Thomas age 7 a scholar and George age 4 a scholar, also a Boarder George Phase age 50 an Agricultural Labourer from Aldershot. The 1881 Census shows Thomas is still an Inn Keeper at The Blue Bell, at Batts Corner, with his wife Caroline, with only their son George age 14 still living at home working as an Agricultural Labourer. The census also states he was formally a Grocer. Caroline his wife died age 55 and was buried 16th September 1884.

Thomas married Alice Etherington age 32 a widow, the daughter of Joseph Swift, they married at Frensham on 16th October 1886, William Bonner was a witness. Thomas and Alice had a daughter Blanche born 21st February 1889, she was baptised 24th March 1889. The 1891 census show's Thomas still has the Blue Bell Inn at Batts Corner, Dockenfield. Thomas age 60 a Licensed Victualler. Alice his wife, age 36, George his son now age 24 a general labourer, and a daughter Blanche age 2, Blanche sadly died 2 years later age 4, and was buried on 4th December 1893.
