THOMAS CHEDZOY

THOMAS CHEDZOY 1814 - 1873

Thomas Chedzoy was the 5th child of Issacher Chedzoy and Charlotte Baynham, he was baptised 18th December 1814 at Stoke St Gregory church. Thomas married Edith Staple daughter of James Staple on 5th December 1848. Both signed with their mark, witnessed by Samuel Richards and James Chedzoy. They had 8 children, Ellen Mary was baptised 2nd July 1849. She married widower Samuel Loveridge on 17th May 1877. Susan was baptised 18th August 1850.

The 1851 census shows Thomas and his family living at Stoke St Gregory. Thomas Chedgzey, head, aged 34, agricultural labourer. Edith Chedgzey, wife, aged 30. Ellen Mary Chedgzey, daughter, aged 1. Susan Chedgzey, daughter, aged 7 months.

George Henry born 1853, Edwin born 1854 and Emily born 1855, were all baptised on10th June 1855. Albert born 1856, and baptised 27th July 1856. William was born November 1860 and  baptised 3rd February 1861. Jane baptised 18th January 1863.

The 1861 census was copied down for me by an elderly relative, so I'm not sure where the family were living, but here are the main details.:- Thomas Chedzoy age 45, Agricultural Labourer, Edith his wife, age 41, Ellen, daughter age 12, Susan, daughter age 10, Nursemaid, George, son age 8, Agricultural Labourer, Edwin age 7, Scholar, Emily, daughter age 5, Albert, son age 4, Jane, daughter age 1, William, son age 6 months. The 1871 census show's him living at Meare Green. Thomas died age 57 and was buried 3rd October 1873.

SUSAN CHEDZOY - Susan was the 2nd child of Thomas Chedzoy and Edith Staple, she was born July  1850 and was baptised 18th August 1850. She went into Service, I found her on the 1881 census at 5 Widcombe Terrace, Widcombe, Somerset. Robert Pitt, head, age 63, Mechanical Engineer employing 110 men, born Middlesex. Selina Pitt, wife, age 68, born Rochdale, Lancashire, Walter Pitt, son, age 28, unmarried, Mechanical Engineer, born Bath, Somerset, Amelia Schweiter, age 27, unmarried, visitor, Governess, born Switzerland, Lucretia Hastings, age 13, Visitor, Scholar, born Portsmouth, Hampshire, Susan Chedzoy age 29, unmarried, Servant, Cook (Domestic Servant) born Stoke St Gregory, Maria Clark, age 26, unmarried, Servant, Housemaid (Domestic Servant) born Wyke, Somerset.

GEORGE HENRY CHEDZOY - George was the 3rd child of Thomas Chedzoy and Edith Staple, he was born about 1852, and was baptised with his sister Emily and brother Edwin at Stoke St Gregory on 10th June 1855. I found George on the 1881 census living at Cottage, Up Cerne, Dorset. George H Chedzoy age 29, Gardener, born Stoke St Gregory, Louisa Chedzoy, Wife, age 30, born Dorchester, Dorset, Fanny G. Chedzoy, daughter age 2, born at Yeovil, Somerset, Arthur H Chedzoy, son, age 3 months, born at Up Cerne, Dorset.

EDWIN CHEDZOY -  Edwin was the 4th child of Thomas Chedzoy and Edith Staple, he was born about 1854, and was baptised on 10th June 1855, with brother George Henry and sister Emily. He married Lita. I found them on the 1881 census, Living at 14 Prospect Builds, in the census district of Lyncombe & Widcombe, Somerset. Edwin Chidzey age 26, Gardener, born at Stoke St Gregory. Lita Chidzey, wife, age 28, born at Wanstrow, Somerset, Liley Chidzey, daughter, age 11 months, born at Bath, Somerset. The spelling of Chidzey, could be down to translation error on the census, or pronunciation, which would sound like Chidzey and not Chedzoy. The 1901 census shows the family now living at 35 Cleverton Street, Bath. Edwin Chedgzoy, head, aged 48, Market Gardener, born at Stoke St Gregory. Lititia, wife, aged 49, born at Wanstrow. Lily C. daughter, aged 20, School Teacher, born at Bath. Arthur E., son, aged 18, Printer Machinist, born at Bath. George E. Smith, Boarder, aged 19, Shop Assistant (Grocer), born at Chippenham, Wilts.

ALBERT  CHEDZOY - Albert was the 6th child of Thomas Chedzoy and Edith Staple, he was born in 1856 and was baptised 27th July 1856. In 1881 he was living at Mere Green, Lodging with Sarah Kinglake, widow age 68, a Laundress, and her 2 children Samuel age 24, Agricultural Labourer, Jane age 26, Dressmaker, grandson Levi Kinglake, age 3, Albert Chedzoy age 24, Agricultural Labourer.
