TOWILL FAMILY NO. 2

This Towill branch is connected to my Cruse line by a 2nd marriage. Perhaps it will connect to the other Towill line as investigations and research progress. My thanks to Pat Arthur who has supplied me with birth, death and marriage certificates and, written accounts about her family.

BARTHOLOMEW TOWILL 1779 - 1854

Bartholomew was born about 1779,

WILLIAM TOWILL 1822 - 1868

William was the first child of Bartholomew Towill and  Jane Mudge, he was baptised at Kenn on 3rd February 1822. William married Elizabeth Hayman daughter of John Hayman at St Sidwells, Exeter on 30th March 1844. I found William on the 1841 census for Kenton, living with Simon Rabjohns a Mason. Presumably William was apprenticed to me.

William and Elizabeth had 12 children, not all reached adulthood. Their first child was Emma Jane born 30th December 1844, followed by Mary Ann  born 16th or 18th July 1846, then  Elizabeth was born 21st or 28th January 1848.  Mary Ann was born 5th September 1851.  The 1851 census shows the family living at Kenton. William, head of the family aged 29, Mason Journeyman born at Powderham. Elizabeth his wife aged 32 born at Broadclist. Emma his daughter aged 7 born at Broadclist. Mary Ann his daughter aged 6 born at Kenton and Elizabeth his daughter aged 3 also born at Kenton.

Tragedy struck the family soon after the census, when Mary Ann died on 21st March 1851, Elizabeth was 3 months pregnant, when the baby was born on 5th September, she was named Mary Ann. The following year Emma Jane died on 12th May 1852 she was 8 years old. Elizabeth was pregnant again, and on 19th November 1852 their first son Eli was born.  Two years later William was born 28th August 1854. Then George was born 5th July 1856. Henry John was born 27th June February 1859. Tom Hayman was born 22nd October 1861. 1862 was a bad year for the family Henry John died on 5th June 182 and daughter Elizabeth died 27th September 1862. Jane was born 24th January 1864, but sadly died 21st February 1869 aged 5 years.

William Towill died aged 46 on 14th March 1868 from Pulmonary Consumption, at Kenton in Devon. Elizabeth married widower John Clash Cruse on 27th April 1871 at Castle Street Chaple, Exeter. Witnesses were Kate Annetta Towill and James Towill.
