WILCOCKS/WILLCOX FAMILY TREE

My thanks to David C Willoughby who has kindly given me information on his Willcox branch.

ABRAHAM WILLCOX 1750 - 1829

Abraham was born at Powderham about 1750. He married Grace Towill from Kenton on 17th November 1778 at Powderham, witnessed by John Pearce & Samuel Richards, an entry is also in the Kenton parish registers. The witnesses were John Pearce and Samuel Richards. Abraham and Grace settled in Powderham and raised their family. Robert was baptised 24th November 1778, John baptised 8th June 1781, Mary Anne Eve baptised 19th October 1783, Frances baptised 29th July 1789 and Hannah baptised 30th December 1790. John's wife Grace died aged 60 or 63, she was brought from Powderham to Kenton to be buried on 30th July 1812. Abraham died in March 1829 aged 79, a coroner's inquest found that the cause of death was "from inclemency of the weather being exposed in the marches all night" Abraham was buried at Powderham on 8th March 1829. 

JOHN WILLCOX 1781 - 

John was the second child of Abraham Willcox and Grace Towill, he was baptised at Powderham on 8th June 1781. He married Sally Eams at Kenton on 11th July 1802 where they settled and raised their family. In the parish registers Sally is sometimes known as Sarah. Abraham born 17th September 1802, baptised 31st October 1802. John was born 15th January 1805 and was privately baptised the next day, he was received into the church 28th June. John sadly died aged 8, and was buried 13th August 1812. Mary Anne baptised 17th February 1808, Elizabeth was baptised 30th January 1814. Thomas John born 24th July 1816, baptised 3rd November 1816, The register shows they were living at South Town and John was a Carpenter. John born about 1818, William Henry born 8th August 1819, baptised 31st December 1819. The register now says that John was a Shopkeeper. Frances was born 24th October 1810 and baptised 24th March. Louisa Grace born 10th March 1823, baptised 4th April 1823.

The 1841 census shows the family living in Kenton, at the Castle Inn in South Town where John was the Innkeeper and general victualler. Living with them was their son Abraham, a Baker and visiting was their grandson John Willcox Scanes, son of Samuel Tuck Scanes and Mary Anne Willcox. John's wife Sally died during the next 10 years. 

John's wife Sarah died 13th July 1850 aged 69. The 1851 census shows John a widow aged 70 and still an Innkeeper, his son John as yet unmarried aged 33 working as a Brewer, daughter Louisa also unmarried aged 27 and visitor grand daughter Frances Scanes aged 11.

MARY ANN WILCOCKS

Mary Ann was the second child of John Willcox and Sarah, she was born at Kenton and was baptised 17th February 1808, she married Samuel Tuck Scanes on 27th May 1832 at Saint Mary Steps, Exeter. They moved to Ide, where their four children were born, John W. born about 1836, Frances Elizabeth born about 1839, Mary Jane born in 1844 and Ellen born in 1847. Samuel died in 1877 and Mary Ann went to live with her daughter Mary Jane Cruse until her death age 80 on 28th September 1888. Her grandson Fred Hellier registered her death.
