WILLIAM CHEDZOY

WILLIAM CHEDZOY 1860 -

William was the 7th child of Thomas Chedzoy and Edith Staple, he was baptised at Stoke St Gregory on 3rd February 1861. When William was 12 years old his father died. I found him on the 1881 census, living in Stoke St Gregory, with his sister Ellen and brother in law, Samuel Loveridge age 40, Hay Trusser, Ellen Loveridge, wife, age 31, Frederick Loveridge, son, age 10, Scholar, William Chedzoy, Lodger, age 21, Labourer, John weadon, Lodger, age 30 unmarried, Hay Trusser.

William married Emma Sandford daughter of George Sandford on 29th May 1884 at Stoke St Gregory. They lived at Dark Lane, Stoke St Gregory. William was a Farm Labourer. Emma had an illegitimate son Thomas George who was born March 1884, just before her marriage to William. Whilst he was christened with the Sandford name, he was always known as a Chedzoy. William & Emma  had another 9 children, Sydney born February 1886, Charles Henry baptised 20th November 1887, but sadly died aged 6 days, he was buried 1st December 1887. Reginald Charles born 11th January 1889, Lily Gertrude born 1890, Herbert John born 1893, Ernest born November 1895, Ellen Rose, all baptised on 6th September 1896, Florence May baptised 12th March 1899 and Edith Maud baptised 29th November 1903.

The 1891 census shows the family living at Dark Lane. William Chedzoy, head, aged 30, farm labourer. Emma, wife, aged 31. Thomas, son, aged 7. Sidney, son, aged 5. Reggie, son, aged 4. and Lily, daughter, aged 4 months?.

The 1901 census is confusing to say the least, regards some names and ages. They are still living at Dark Lane. William Chedzoy, head, aged 38, Farm Labourer. Emma, wife, aged 38, Withy Whitener. Sidney, son, aged 15, Farm Labourer. Lily, daughter, aged 10. Hubert, son, aged 8. Ernest, son, aged 5. Nelly, daughter, aged 4. Florry, daughter, aged 4.
