WILLIAM HENRY WILLCOX

WILLIAM HENRY WILLCOX 1820 -
William Henry was the 5th child of John Willcox and Sarah, he was born at Kenton about 1820. William's older sister Mary Anne married Samuel Tuck Scanes a Carpenter from Ide. The 1841 census shows William also became a Carpenter and was living at Ide with this sister and brother-in-law. Next door was Henry Scanes, Samuel's father also a Carpenter and Wheelwright. Perhaps this is where William Henry met Jane Scanes. Three years later they married at St Mary Steps parish church in Exeter, both were living at West Street, Exeter at the time. Jane was a milliner. The witnesses were Samuel Scanes and E. Brewer.
They stayed in Ide for a while, where their son Henry William was born on 28th November 1844 and baptised at Ide 25th December 1844, then moving to Kenton where Louisa was born about 1847 and Elizabeth born on 17th February 1848, who sadly died. They moved again to Bishopsteignton where Emily was born about 1851, then went to Teignmouth where another child named Elizabeth was born about 1852, followed by John born about 1856, Jane born about 1859, and Fred born about 1961.
The 1861 census shows the family living at 20 Bilton Street in West Teignmouth. William Henry was a builder employing 10 men and 4 boys, his son Henry was a carpenter and nephew John W Scanes aged 24 also a carpenter was one of the employees. William Henry died some time during the next 10 years. By 1881 his widow Jane, son John and daughters Louisa and Emily had moved to London and were living together at 33 Redesdale Street, Christchurch, Chelsea. John was working as a Secretary to a Public Company.
HENRY WILLIAM WILLCOX 1844 -
Henry William was the first child of William Henry Willcox and Jane Scanes, born on the 28th November 1844 at Ide. Henry also became a carpenter and worked with his father. Henry married Frances Elizabeth Coath daughter of Robert Henry Coath, at Newton Abbot register office on 1st September 1871, Henry was now a Joiner and was living at West Lawn Terrace, West Teignmouth, Frances Elizabeth was living at Brunswick Place, Dawlish, the witnesses were Susanna Booridge Pessell and Samuel Drew.
