WOODLEY FAMILY TREE
My research into the Woodley's is not extensive at the moment, although I have found loads in every Parish Register I look in. These are listed under Woodley's in other Parish Registers, and Berkshire villages.
THOMAS WOODLEY (My thanks to Paul Bishop for pointing me in the right direction)
Thomas Woodley married Mary Harwood at Hagbourne church on 29th July 1761. Thomas was described as a labourer. The couple lived in Hagbourne, baptizing 8 children. The first was Thomas on 21st March 1762, then Frances on 9th September 1764. 3 years later Jonathan was baptised 22nd February 1767, he must have died in infancy as another Jonathan was baptised 4th November 1770. James was baptised 3rd October 1773, followed 3 years later by Jenny, baptised 28th April 1776. Mary was baptised 7th November 1779. John was baptised 15th December 1782.
There is a burial for Thomas Woodley at Hagbourne on 27th April 1783. No age is given.
JONATHAN WOODLEY 1770 - 1840
My information on Jonathan is vague, and I hope I have found the correct information on him and his parents above. I believe Jonathan was born in October 1770 son of Thomas & Mary. He seems to have been a Jack the Lad, getting engaged to Elizabeth Bacon from Hagbourne in 1792, The first banns were read on 25th March at Long Wittenham Church, no more banns were read in either Parish. John may have moved to Haswell where the following year he married Elizabeth Buckingham at Chilton Parish Church on 28th April 1793. If these are the right Jonathan and Elizabeth then Elizabeth was pregnant at the time. They settled in Long Wittenham, where they raised their large family of 12 children.
From here I think my information is correct. Their first child Thomas was baptised 3rd November 1793, then Annah was baptised 9th August 1795, Benjamin was baptised 20th August 1797, John was baptised 10th March 1799, William was baptised 2nd November 1800, Jonathan was baptised 23rd January 1803, George was baptised 25th November 1804, Lydia was baptised 7th December 1806, Eliza was baptised 12th March 1809, James was baptised 8th August 1813, Giles was baptised 8th October 1815 but sadly died age 4 months and was buried 24th February 1816, Fanny was baptised 7th February 1819, but she sadly died age 2 months she was buried 30th March 1819.
Jonathan died aged 69 on 16th January 1840 from Epilepsy, he was buried at Long Wittenham on 19th January 1840.
LYDIA WOODLEY 1806 -
Lydia was the 8th child of Jonathan Woodley and Elizabeth Buckingham, she was baptised at Long Wittenham on 7th December 1806. When Lydia was 18 she married William Slatter from Radley, on 10th October 1825 at Long Wittenham Church, her brother William was a witness along with Maria Taylor, only William Slatter could sign his name.
Lydia moved to Radley with William and started their family. Josiah born 1826, Joseph born 1829, Samuel born 1832, Eliza born 1834, James born 1839. Lydia was pregnant with her last child when her husband William died from inflamation of the Bowel on 10th October 1843, the baby was born the following March 1844, she named the baby Lydia, but it died age 1 week and was buried 17th March 1844. A few days later her her youngest son James age 5 drowned in the Park and was buried on 21st March 1844. Josiah had already left home and moved to Abingdon, followed by Joseph, by 1851 Lydia and the rest of the family had also moved to Abingdon. Samuel was taking charge of his sisters and Lydia was Nurse to 81 year old William Weaving living at Vineyard in the St Helen's district, she also was doing the Laundry, there was a young girl general servant May Ann Woodley who may have been a relative to Lydia. From here I've lost track of Lydia, as the St Helen's Parish Registers are not deposited at the Record Office.
