James was the first child of John and Dorothy Yendell, he was born about 1836 at Chumleigh. I do not know anything about his young adult life, but he appears on the 1891 census, as married to Mary Jane Scanes-Cruse and living at Ide. The census shows James Yendell age 55, General Shopkeeper, born at Chumleigh, his wife Mary Jane age 46 born at Ide and step daughter Agnes Lily Sercombe age 18, married, living with head of family. His wife Mary Jane had owned the Shop for many years before James met her.
