HEBER PERCY SLATTER

My thanks to Graham McKechnie, who during his research of Reading Footballers came across my website and then gave me information about Heber's life written below.

HEBER PERCY SLATTER 1887 - 1918

Heber was the third child of William Slatter and Lucy Froud. He was born in 1887 at Earley in Reading. The 1891 census records his name as Herbert, but his uncle Heber's name is recorded correctly. The family were living at 23 Awbery Terrace, Reading.

I found Heber on the 1901 census in Christ's Hospital, Newgate Street, London. aged 14, a scholar born at Reading.

Heber married Kate Mitchell between July and September 1908 in the Reading Area. They had two children, Leslie born 23rd January 1909 and Muriel born 26th November 1910. During 1910, Heber became one of the Football Team for Reading. He played for them until 1913. He was also a Rate Collector for the Borough. At some stage after 1911 the family moved to 77 Norfolk Road, Reading (opposite the Old Elm Park football ground).

Heber joined the Royal Garrison Artillery on 8th November 1915, with whom he served in France until he was wounded with a shell in action on 3rd May 1918. He died at the field hospital on 7th May. He was buried at Couin cemetery.
